who was the last player to come from the youth team/reserves to play in the first team

who was the last player to come from the youth team/reserves to play in the first team

Nicky Hunt? Joey O Brian?

Might have been a couple who played a bit part but not progressed so I dont think you can count them

Was it basham? Been piss poor for a few years I know that!

Three years ago the Reserves won the FA Premier League North under Jimmy Phillips. I think the U-18s came second in their League. The problem seems to have been making the next step up to Premier League first team football.

It seems the risks of taking a chance on youngsters is much greater now. Look at City for instance who had one of the best youth teams for a while. Hardly any have gone on to 1st team football in the last couple of years. Liverpool the same.

It's also a bit of hit and miss loaning young players out to be given a good kicking in Div 1 or 2,

I suppose the last young lad to have come from the Reserves is Bogdan, but not from the Academy.

So who have we had over recent years?

Nolan

Basham

O'Brien

Hunt

Holden

I'm struggling for more.....

Going back a few years and decent/half decent players

Reid

Allardyce

Whatmore

Gary Jones

Paul Jones

Bennett

Burke?

Chris Thompson

Steve Thompson

Farnworth

Phillips

Danny Livesey?

Sign of the times then if youth teams are doing well but struggling to make the step up. Teams have to look abroad now to keep up with the rest of the league. Shame really.

danny ward?

'not helped by the previous regimes neglect of the youth system'

Supporters have to go back as far as former captain Kevin Nolan, now at Newcastle, before they last saw a player come through the ranks to become a first-team regular.

Nicky Hunt? Over 100 appearences for the club?

danny ward?

thinks so

we didn't produce danny ward (similarly nolan)

leeds did

until you start putting young players on the pitch, why would parents choose to send their kids to us

so you probably struggle to get the bestter talent in, especially when theres so many clubs fishing the same waters in our area

and when we do get one fit for the fisrt team, they get dogs abuse

id shut the academy down

Many clubs (eg City) produce players after they have got them at U15 (micah richards for example)

John Cofee (Man Utd) is another, sold for 500k (and rising) at 15 from Burnley.

Stockport County have produced 7 pro's in two years that are in the first team now or played first team and have since been sold to a higher league club.

However Stockport also have a 14 year old who Stoke are about to 'buy'(another player under 15 going to a premier league club).

So when we as a premier league club talk about producing players many have spent their childhood at other clubs.

Im sure heads of youth will also argue that many Bolton Academy players have been at the club since being nine and though they havnt made a first team appearence at Bolton they will be a pro elsewhere which is 'part' of the youth policy - to develop and produce professional footballers.

we didn't produce danny ward

leeds did

didnt know that

some other posters could answer this better than i ever could, but can you 'create' a player, or does it depend if they have talent or not.

ie if we cant get the good ones in the 1st place, is there any point in coaching all the shite instead, with the hope that the odd one has slipped through the net of the big clubs?

I'll answer your question about can you create a player by telling you a story of the time I met Billy Elliot (not the ballet dancer before the jokes start). Billy was an ex Burnley, Sunderland and England player and at the time was manager of Brann Bergen. I met him on the ferry from Bergen to Newcastle and had a few drinks with him. While we were talking a few kids came and asked him for his autograph. One kid said "Billy, if I come and train with you every day can you turn me into a brilliant footballer" Billy who had had a few drinks by this time told the kid to fuck off as he was not a magician and couldn't make him into a footballer. If he had a talent he could develop it and make it better.

I did remark to Billy that the kid was one of his fans and he could have been a bit more diplomatic.

I expect We would have paid compensation to leeds to sign Danny Ward

If Bolton develop a player and he leaves at least now another club will have to pay.

Man City had to pay for Micah Richards - cost to former club ?0

Man Utd had to pay 500k for John Cofee - cost to former club ?0

Stoke will have to pay a fee for a U14 at Stockport - cost to former club ?0

Arsenal would have paid Bolton to sign Kyle Bartley - cost to Bolton ?0

and Bolton will pay to get players from other lower league clubs.

with that, players at Bolton since nine will hope to play in the first team

or play pro for any club

or will get released and may get scouted elsewhere

but whilst at the club they will certainly but getting a good education in the game.

Through that you have to coach the "shite" as its a team game to bring through the 'player'

I would agree that a player cant be created however if you spend everyday at a pro club and your Dad is manager then you have a chance.

Gavin Strachen - Absolute shite - made pro

Kyle Bartley is a great example, we "produced" him and he fucked off elsewhere. Looks like being a future star.

I would agree that a player cant be created however if you spend everyday at a pro club and your Dad is manager then you have a chance.

Gavin Strachen - Absolute shite - made pro

Correct

Me and Gumbo played against him throughout his childhood and he couldn't get into his local team

I would agree that a player cant be created however if you spend everyday at a pro club and your Dad is manager then you have a chance.

Gavin Strachen - Absolute shite - made pro

Gumbo, Dean Overson?

No Comment Traf...

As for Kyle Bartley from Stockport, Cheshire.

He / his parents / his agent were going to Arsenal so him leaving under contract meant BWFC academy got a fee.

If he WOULD have left after his contract expires Bolton would have got no money, money that went back into the academy.

leeds did

Ward was originally at Bradford City before Leeds nabbed him.
