Usual information gathering!

We're going mid-end of Jan for a couple of weeks. 2 maybe 3.

We're after staying somewhere outside of either Baga or Calangute but it would be good to be somewhere with some sort of nightlife. Any WW'ers been before and have any advice on locations, or just general advice on the place itself?

you will be shiting for weeks after you will allmost shit youself to death

Sounds good LW. You should get a job at Holiday Hypermarket! :-)

Don't touch the money.

I've been twice, stopped in Baga and Calangute. Absolutely love the place. If you want somewhere a bit quieter then go to Candolim, it's close enough to both Baga and Calangute if you want somewhere a bit livelier for the odd night out.

I also wouldn't go all inclusive. It defeats the whole idea of going IMO.

Know it well mate, Calangute is a like Blackpool with sunshine full of pissed up russians who need a slap or two, Candolim is better. Better to stay in Baga area and use the beaches to the north away from the rip off merchants. Lots of good restaurants and beer is cheap just keep away from the real cheap stuff as it will be full of glycerene.

If your used to the usual costa del package stuff and bars selling full english and beer then you will think wtf have I come to. But after the first day or so you will either fall in love with the place or be looking for a flight home. The Marinha Dourahda in Baga is a good hotel for your first time and then you can hit the beaches beyond Siolim which are beautiful.

I've been to Candolim twice and 'kin love the place.

As DBP says don't bother with all inclusive as food and drink is dirt cheap anyway.

Depending on what your into you can either laze the days away on the beach being waited on hand and foot for next to nothing or you can get out and about because there is quite a lot to see.

The waterfalls and spice plantation come highly recommended. If you opt for Baga try and spend a night in one of the beach huts for something a bit different.

Palolem beach is worth a visit too but it is very busy these days.

Taxis are dirt cheap and the driver will wait around to take you home from wherever you have been (ours waited overnight when we went to Palolem!)

Alternatively you could hire a scooter

Thanks all. I've heard good reports about Candolim. By the looks of it, none of the 'resorts' are that far away from each other, so we'll probably go for the scooter option. Might check out that hotel in Baga for the first couple of nights and then do a bit of moving around. Presumably 3 weeks wouldn't be too long then?

don't tell the natives you're from Bolton !!!

as soon as you do,they'll be asking ''Daubhill or Deane?''

ive never been but sounds good

I've been to Candolim 3 times, I love the place. If you go, I would recommend that you spend a night on a rice boat...you can book the trip at loads of different places. As for getting around, I would use either taxis or tuk-tuks everywhere as they cost next to luck all. I wouldn't recommend a scooter unless you are very, very confident as the roads are mental.

Food and drink costs luck all, so don't book all inclusive.

Went last year it's fucking ace. Going again 10th of Feb for 2 weeks.

Don't go all inclusive its pointless.

We're staying at Santana beach resort candolim again. Cheap and very good service. Food is top notch in most places.

Candolim calangute and baga are all along the beach in a row. Not a fan of baga we only went once. Calangute can be a bit grim too on a weekend as it gets rammed with local day trippers.

Nightlife wise there are bars /restaurants all down the main and beach roads and there are beach huts all down the beach. Last orders is early but most stay open til the last person goes.

It's cheap as fuck for food and booze pretty much everywhere. Half your money is spent on taxis about places and fake handbags.

100% agree on not going all inc it's a rip off, the beaches of Calangute are Ok but you will get mithered to fuck by folk trying to sell you bits of cloth, beads and their babies. Head north to Morjim etc and you get far less hassle and cheaper beer etc. this will cost you about £5 for a return taxi and is well worth it.

Morjim is a great beach, it's quiet as fuck

I've been 9 times, staying at various places. My fave place is in Arpora (it's near Baga), the Marina Dourada. I've stopped going now, as it got a bit busy, and a bit crazy. We finally packed in when hubby got knocked (not too serious) by a speedboat. They don't seem to have any licencing for the speedboats / jet-skis etc, and no roped off areas - so you get a load of pissed-up Brits / Russians, flying through the area where people are swimming. Also the taxi-drivers started to get a bit greedy, and once the Russians started coming in large numbers, that was that. Still have friends we made when we used to go a lot, who are still there, and having a great time !

Coco Beach, get on a boat and see the dolphins and then out of the bay past all the lifers in the prison.

You been recently Traf, the sea at Coco beach is badly polluted nowadays and I wouldn't suggest you go for a swim, it was a lovely spot once though and the prison trip on the little boat is well worth it.

No, mate, used to go every other year, but not been for 7yrs.

Thinking of going back next March.

Candolim all day long pal. Keep your eye open for a family of five on an LML scooter. Dad's wearing my old yellow Bolton shirt. Time it right and there's a big beach festival / rave called Sunburn going on. Lost two days of my life there ;-0

Also Ashwem Beach is top for the beach huts and becoming ex-pat hippy for a couple or three days.

Only thing spoiling it was the Russians

Sunburn Festival is usually between Christmas and New Year. It's mental....if you're into dance music.

My advice then Traf being as you remember it in its good days is think twice about going back, its not the place it was back then and you might be a bit disapointed. Russians and greedy Bombay mafia have taken their toll.

We have to go back in February after 3 years away for a mates wedding so hopefully things may have got a bit more like, its a shame as it was once a mega place and not just a good place like now.
