Drugs would become an even bigger problem in poor areas again, which in my younger days wouldn't have been all that bad (loads of teenagers lethargic and stuffing their faces with Space Raiders isn't the end of the world) but nowadays kids are taking all sorts.

Or there'll sprout up some entrepreneurial, budding Al Capone types apple juice retails at around 60-70p a litre, buy a gross of cases of that, add some yeast and you're away...

 

Saying that, like most crimes where the 'victim' is HMRC, you'd probably get 20 years on bread and water...

It will only apply to lower end markets. If you are buying decent stuff you are paying 45p a unit anyway, poor folk dont buy decent stuff.

I'm not particularly fond of the current government, but they're clearly in a no-win situation here.

 

Rightly or wrongly, they've decided we should pay 45p per unit as a sop to the health do-gooders.

 

They're going to get it in the neck for helping retailers increase profits and therefore they collect more VAT. The othe option would be to increase the taxation on alcohol, but they'd get it in the neck that way too.

Will a minimum price per unit mean alcoholics will suddenly give up drinking, or start drinking in moderation? No.

 

It's either; window-dressing, a divertisment from something else or a sign they really are a bunch of clueless, reactionary bellends that have also decided to start adding Labour like social-meddling into the mix, incongruously alonggside their usual dogma of 'small Government'.

There have been a number of studies done that refute your opinion.

 

Maybe we should do nothing and the issue will go away of it's own accord.

 

 

I'm against it by the way, I'm firmly in the 3 for a tenner wine / 3 cases of ale for around £20 at home drinker, and they'll go up.

'Studies' generally mean fuck all, I'm thinking of practicality - I've had relatives who are alcoholic and they'd slit your throat for a drink, take the bread from their children's mouth, whatever it took...
