Agree with much of what has been said here, but a bit late now, they/you/we have let it happen and there's too much money swilling around right now to let 'fan power' turn back the clock.

 

Fans want success and signings.

Big signings cost money.

Money comes from wherever you can get it - the millionaire owner, the multi-millions from pay TV, sponsorship etc.

Money talks - and we all follow.

 

I think we would all love to go back to handing over a fiver on the gate with a pie in your pocket and a bellyfull of cheap beer in your gut on the terraces. They should be more concerned about the clubs who have struggled to exist because those big clubs have creamed off much of the cash for years. Including us, for the last few years for a start.

Take Gonzo's point. A family who have been supporting Citeh for generations. What was it, approx 50 years without a trophy or something? Anyway, they stuck by the club through all those years and stuck by them while we were all laughing at them playing in the third tier ... but now the club has turned itself around and is succesful, it means the family can no longer afford to go and watch them? How is that fair?

 

... and don't try and kid yourself (or anyone else) that an increase in ticket prices played any part in that turnaround.

£62 quid is ridiculous, but according to some on here, a tenner for 2 games is not on aswell??

The new UK TV deals (not including increased foreign rights) will mean an increase ranging from £12M for bottom team to £40M for top team.

 

For the bottom team that is equivalent of £21/head on a 30K gate for each of 19 home games or £230K/wk increase to wage bill

For top team that is equivalent of £45/head on a 46K (based on City) gate for each of 19 home games or £769K/wk increase to wage bill

Have a word with yourself. City broke the transfer record with Steve Daley, pushing on inflationary transfer prices back in the early 80s. Just because it didn't work doesn't mean they didn't play a part in it. The club also voted for the Premier League - don't recall any backlash against that vote. It was just more money for 'our' club and sod the rest who aren't in the elite.

 

The signs have been there for years, but everyone has been happy on the gravy train.

 

Like I said, I've got every sympathy with the 'ordinary' (hate that phrase) fan and I would back anyone who took a stand against big fees - and certainly wouldnt attend a match for that money myself (except for a showpiece game maybe). But we've let this go on too long, with too much money swilling about now from sponsorship, advertisers, club owners, TV rights, agents, players' wages etc etc. You can't turn that back because those with a vested interest aren't going to allow it.

 

You can start a new club (FC United, Wimbledon etc), but the end game for those teams will always be to get up the leagues and be back where they started.

You make some good points, especially the FC United, Wimbledon ones. Ultimately their aim is to get up to the top tier where, no doubt, the cost of the tickets will go through the roof.

 

I'm still not having that we (the fans) are reaping what we sowed.

 

We, the fans who attend matches, never asked for SKY to come in and throw billions at the game. We certainly didn't ask for players' wages to rise to an unprecedented percentage of turnover.

 

I think it's a tad unfair to say it's 'our' fault for continuing to go to football matches.

 

... although I do appreciate that as long as folk continue to pay £62 for a ticket then clubs will continue to charge it.

It won`t change but the only stand to make is the `I`m not going anymore` stand which is more of a conscious decision to find something better to do rather than a revolt.

 

I sometimes forget to even listen on Saturdays now which is sad but I just do other stuff and I know I`m not alone in that.

IMO £62 is an obscene ammount of money to charge fans for tickets to the football. Whether they are the current league champions or not, its just too much money. People will pay it, but personally I dont think its right for clubs to charge such prices.

I`d say I`ll go about 8 times this season and watch the rest on telly cos its £62 rather than go to every game when it was £26 and not on telly.

8 times would probably turn into 4 times and then I`d lose interest and stop going completely.

 

Then my lad wouldn`t go at all and he wouldn`t grow up with any interest in the club and they`ve lost a fan forever.

 

Until the rich clubs fuck off into their inevitable super league and leave the rest of us to some level of normality then prices will continue in an upwards direction to pay the ridiculous wages that top players command.

I only go to a few games a year now, I will always cherish the memories and bwfc will always be in my heart, however these days shelling out that money to enhance the bank balance of players on money between 10k and 30k per week is a hurdle I simply cannot overcome. Especially when some of those players have personalities and brains the size of a pea.

I am not saying £62 is a right and fair price.

 

I am saying that City as a club are the ones currently pushing salaries up and this knocks onto prices, City poached Nasri and Clichy from Arsenal because Arsenal would nt match their wage demands.

 

I have nt heard any City complaining about the millions they have to spend, the increase in prices is driven by the fact clubs are falling over themselves to pay players their obscene wages. City fans protesting about the ticket prices but at the same time gloating about their success is contradictory.

 

It is like going on a 5 star holiday and then complaining when the credit card bill arrives.

 

What should Arsenal do ? charge £40 per ticket, so £22 less per ticket, so £880k per game less income, 20 games a season, that is £17.6M less per year so City can nick even more players?

 

personally i have a season ticket for me and the lad, cost about £400 i think a year, brilliant value. But people moan about our ticket prices. I would nt pay £62 for a league game no matter who we were playing.

I'd rather pay £62 when we were league champions than £32 in the Championship. Fact.
