Aye LOTR now that's serious escapism, not this overgrown schoolboy Shiite. The real event opens on the 12 Dec. got my exec seats booked for the 12:20pm screening at the machester odeon 3D IMAX on the 20th, then off for a a big manc and some "cry for help" wings at Solitas. That'll sort me????

Having read the books when I was around 10 years old, fair to say that LOTR (and The Hobbitt) hold a serious fascination for me. The workings of Tolkiens mind to come up with Middle Earth would have been close to that line between genius and madman. 

 

I did make the mistake of trying to read the pre-The Hobbitt book 'The Silmarillion'. Now that is seriously hard fucking work. Far too many 'begats' for my liking. I think I got about a third of the way through and then threw a bag over it.

 

There have been irritations with Jacksons take. I fucking hated Frodo sailing off with the Elves at the end of LOTR's 'The Return Of the King'. Completely cut out the return to The Shire and having to rid the place  of Sharkey (Saruman) and his thugs (including Grima Wormtongue).

 

Now he's stretched out The Hobbitt and introduced all sorts of characters that were never in there.

 

All told though, a wonderful series of films and, at the very least, he has brought to the masses one of the greatest stories ever told (IMO) which many would never have taken the time to read in books.

There is scope for another 3 or 4 films in that book.There are a number of small things that connect the Hobbit to goings on in the Silmarillion that was based over the preceding 5000 years. The swords for example that they find in the trolls cave were made in Gondolin during the first age, this was the hidden elvish city that lay hid within a mountain range for 400 years before being destroyed by by Morgoths army supported by balrogs and dragons.

 

Now I like the extended Hobbit. It needed padding out as it was primarily written as a childrens book. Jackson knew he had made a big mistake with LOTR as he underestimated how popular they would be, it could have easily been extended to four to include the full story.

 

As for the sneering of these star wars types, there's those that enjoy fine claret and those that think Blue Nun is the height of taste.

Not sure about that, I love star wars but to compare a hack like George 'You maybe able to write this shit, but try saying it' Lucas to Tolkien is stretching it a little. It'll obviously been seen as having a cultural impact; it signalled the beginning of a new genre of film making, and franchises; but Tolkien was part of the bloody Inklings. Talented writers who really strove to craft new English narratives. Tolkien wanted England to have the same mythology as Scandinavia; so wrote LotR to do this. That's pretty special. 

 

I agree with Bolty, but I have to say I've not enjoyed The Hobbit at all; the second film especially looked pretty bad. The barrel riding bit was for me awful, like watching a theme park ride. 

 

I've read LotR about three times and always found something new in it. I think Peter Jackson did a really good job overall, ending wasn't the best and the battle of the shire would have been good to see; but that would just be for geeks like me.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a fan of LOTR, but I think you overestimate it's importance and down play that of Star Wars.

 

Primarily you say LOTR was to generate a mythology for England; in not sure it's really done that, ha it?

 

And I know you accept this above, but Star Wars has createda world wide phenomenon and has effected so much in film, culture and even politics.

 

Jedi was even the 4th largest religion in the 2001 census!

 

And many fillum officianados state that the LOTR movies wouldn't have happened if it wasn't for the original Star Wars trilogy...I know you mean the wider LOTR, but without the movies it wouldn't have reached many.

My nephew is 5 and is as obsessed with star wars now as I was when I was 5...and maybe am now!

 

This means that if he carries on with this early love, in 30 years time he will be as interested in it as I am now. Personally he may not be, but quite frankly a large number of his generation will be.

 

Star Wars may not be the most well crafted story of our times from an evangelist's perspective, but that's never been what popular culture has been about

 

Bolton Wanderers are possibly not by far the greatest team the world has ever seen either; but try telling those of us that go and watch them that....that's pretty much what you did about Star Wars
