Bolton Council Wants To Turn Newport Street Into 'european-Style Boulevard

It doesn't matter how much money they chuck at it, it will still be full of scruffy bastards

It's too late to salvage in my opinion. As Carlos says, it's full of our European friends already and did I read on here that is due to a council policy of being an open house to them. In doing that I believe they've ostracised those who lived there first. Well, apart from the scruffy English fuckers who doss round town too.

Now, when's my daily mail being delivered?

You could pave the street with gold, until they go round with a big van and drag in all the pikeys scumbags pisspots and beggars then nobody with any kind of standards will spend cash in Bolton.

It is a fucking shithole. Putting up some fancy street furniture won't do a thing.

Reminds me of Salford council turning chapel Street into a Paris avenue with European cafe culture. Instead they've created a long car park in the middle of a shit hole. Cost them millions as well whilst they've laid off council workers. Who runs these councils? I've seen better ideas on wanderers ways then any of the shit they've ever proposed for Bolton.

Had to go into Stockport town centre last week

It was fucking awful and Bolton and a hundred other towns in UK must be the same

With out of town retail parks and Internet shopping I can imagine (apart from the big cities) some sci-fiesque not so distant future becoming reality where they're no go zones for alot of folk

A real ghettoisation

As long as they build a wall so they don't come in the civilised parts, it may work :D

That. Exactly that. Except for the Mail bit.

I've walked up Newport Street and been the only English speaker within earshot. And that's a fair range considering they're all shouty bastards.

You should have come down to Macclesfield. A lovely town, no dossers, pikeys or scroungers but a few musicians playing violins. There is also a great market on the last Sunday of the month. http://www.treaclemacclesfield.co.uk/

There are a lot of local shops selling homemade ware along with a few High St chains. The atmosphere is great and its a nice place to shop.

Unfortunatley the council and developers seem to think that we need a huge shopping centre on the edge of town so they can detroy the town centre.

I went into the town centre for the first time in honks yesterday.

The amount of glassy eyed, mouth breathing scruffy immigrants and scroungers is alarming.

With the exception of Beaverbrooks, M&S, and Prestons, the whole place stinks of poverty and desperation.

Once those 3 retailers get the fuck out of Dodge, no amount of cast iron lampposts and crazy paving will save it.

It reminded me of the freak ghetto in Total Recall. Fucking utterly awful.

Did you see any wimmin with 3 tits?

Indeed, Bury was Lucky in that it's development had started just as the recession hit. But the majority of towns and cities outside the big places are struggling.

Ani mentioned Bratfod on another thread.

Its all well and good having plans but until private investment is found fuck all real change will happen.

There's some fantastic plans out there for different areas of Bolton not just the town centre but they all need one thing, money.

Bolton has changed beyond repair over the last 15 years,

And I see that Good Old Labour, who still run the council think that chucking yet more money at the problem will sort it =@

our council once again trying to polish a kurd

Le un euro patisserie, tres bien.

I'm amazed they can find £9 million, but can't afford to service the parks, empty street bins etc. Mind you, they can afford to ship in a load of celebrity chefs every year, so there must be money somewhere.

Agree with the above. Bolton Council doesn't own the shops, so ultimately an do nothing about the vast majority of Newport Street, apart from a new bench, paving stones and lamp post. Building contractors must love our council in light of how many times we've dug up the precinct and surrounding areas. If you see a pic of the area in the 60s or70s, you'll notice it looks no better with all that money thrown at it in he decades that followed.

Like most towns, it needs a radical solution, which is national, not local. Bolton has been hit with out of town shopping, inflated parking charges and a recession. That'll take a generation to sort, with the likelihood of the town becoming just a development of flats in the meantime as landlords buy up the property on the cheap and use it for DSS, students or asylum seekers living space.

That should be the final nail.

Oddly enough getting folk living in the town centre is one thing that will drive the town centre upwards.

It'll take some time but its what is needed to fix town centres.

With being so close to manc and the Trafford centre Bolton will never be a destination shopping centre again, that's just the way of the world nowadays.

But by creating somewhere folk can do their day to day shopping, provide stuff to do of an evening, besides getting pissed, then the centre will improve.

But Manc is all designer shops, same with TV. You'd stand a chance if you had something distinctive, lots of smaller traders with small, unique shops. Something like a market hall. Oh wait...

Quality living space will drive the town centre forward, but filling it full of people in cheap digs who would rather be somewhere else won't.

Not set foot in the Market Hall since its 'makeover'. Unless you want to dress like a cunt, surprised anyone does.
