August 12, 201313 yr You arent wrong starvin. I had to look into that incident, as the airline i work for flies into Ireland, and prepare a precautionary warning for our pilots, there were quite a few errors in that incident, and failures on quite a few parts, without going into a lot of technical details, the Instument landing system was being calibrated at Derry Airport, at the exact moment the flight was landing! The pilot, and the air traffic controllers, plus the crew who were in the calibration aircraft were all deemed at fault. The runway at derry and the one at Ballykelly where he actually landed at are aligned almost exactly, the pilot, and atc didnt realise he was in the wrong place until he hit the ground, and managed to stop just in front of a railway line. Con, is it true that some planes can now fly from one airport to another with zero input from pilots? Was told that the auto take off and landing systems at heathrow and other major airports do all the work. So, in essence, the pilots just sit there watching it all happen.
August 12, 201313 yr Con, is it true that some planes can now fly from one airport to another with zero input from pilots? Was told that the auto take off and landing systems at heathrow and other major airports do all the work. So, in essence, the pilots just sit there watching it all happen. The Pilots have to input data into the flight management system, And need to take the aircraft off, and land it. But basically a pilot on a modern airliner is a very highly skilled systems monitor. Between arrival at crusing height and approach, its mainly communicating on the radio, and adjustments in height/ course that may crop up en route that wernt planned, aside of that there isnt much to do.The technology exists for pilots not to be there. Where pilots earn their money is when things go wrong, as decision making is highly critical.
August 12, 201313 yr Ah the A380. When you are on board it sometimes feels like you arent in the Air, very very quiet inside. Im still in awe of that plane! You should meet the engineers that work on them. Clever, handsome and generally ace

August 12, 201313 yr I have, the german ones specifically are ace I a bolt gauge and a rule! Full on engimineering ha ha
August 12, 201313 yr I remember him 'helping' (i.e. drinking brews & eating biscuits) me with some Ilva furniture when we moved. Basically his theory of 'you really don't need all those bolts' scared me off flying on any kind of airbus altogether. Wise words indeed.
August 12, 201313 yr Ah the A380. When you are on board it sometimes feels like you arent in the Air, very very quiet inside. Im still in awe of that plane! I've had a go in the emirates ones about 6 times now. The plane / flight is great, it's everything else that is shit. There's twice as many people queuing to get on ( at Manchester they close one of the piers to herd you into a holding pen) and twice as many queueing at immigration, at baggage reclaim, and then queueing for a taxi. August 13, 201313 yr con, was under that emirates fella that lands in manc around dinner time it looks like its stopped as it waits to complete the descent frightening I was at the side of the runway when one (Emirates A380) was taking off this evening, far quieter than the plane in front of it. BAs dreamliner is far prettier than their A380 though, and comes with an onboard bbq - result!
