Pubs can't compete with supermarkets selling boxes of beer at a loss 24/7. Well, most can't - funny how quality outlets like The Tap are thriving and looking to expand though. Quality over quantity is the future.

If there were more thirsty blokes like you Starvin then pubs wouldn't be closing.

I suppose if there's no whities in the area there'll be no demand for a pub.

There's no Asian community over here,none whatsoever.

 

Can only think of two non-shithole pubs that have bitten the dust due to the economic climate,and tesco bought them.

 

Granted it a lot smaller place and is teaming with pissheads.

Same here. The vic has shut and turned into a shop but it was shit anyway and the queens is intermittently open due to having no full time landlord.

Part of it is in a way. If you a have a large non-drinking community of any cred or colour then pubs will/have shut.

I thought this until quite recently, then I saw the facts. My brother-in-law used to work for Punch Taverns and now works for Fullers as an area manager. We were talking about this very scenario the other week and I trotted out how the only way to succeed wasto have a free house. He then, much to my chargrin, proceed to produce a document that showed that far more "freehouses" are going to the wall than managed or tennanted pubs.

 

The problem the freehouses seem to have is that they are generally mortgaged right up to the hilt, even if they'r eable to buy their ale cheaper, their running costs can be massive, especially if they want a refurb - a brewery tends to help with this and they're also currently willing to look at rent supports etc.

 

Anyway, the gist of the conversation ended up that he conceded that pubs are being killed off due to not just beer cost but also people changing their habits (a lot of folk now prefer to drink wine instead of ale, and why go to a grotty pub to  enjoy a nice glass of red?) plus people can still keep in tocuh and communicare with each other through social media instead of having to meet in the pub - it's sad, but probably true. Loads of people spend their time in coffee shops as well now, and that certainly didn't happen 20 years ago. Even pubs that look busy may not actually be successful.

 

Pubs now have to be able to offer a lot more than they used to in order to stay appealing.....Sport, WiFi, food and coffee etc.   Apparently, according to one of his reports, the largest seller of coffee in the UK in 2012 was......Wetherspoons, now that is fucking sad when a pub chain is selling more coffee than actual coffee chains!

 

I constantly mourn the passing of "the pub" although I am amazed when people say "It's a shame that the local has closed down, it was a cracking little boozer back in  the day"  -  "When did you last go in there"  -  "Probably about 10 years ago"......

Absoloutley spot on.

 

Freehouses if run right can be a massive success,but they are obviously in a more much more delicate situation than a pub owned by a company.

 

Couple of slow months its game over.

 

It's extremely rare you see a pub owned by M&B and the likes go under.

 

In this town it's all about the food now,if food isn't served or is shite,the wet trade alone very rarely keeps the places going.

 

People say pubs are dying...are they fuck as like,the ones that go are just failing to get with the times.

 

Early doors type boozers are totally unsubstanable in today's world,and in honestly not what folk want anymore.

 

Like Cwp say, people habits have completely changed,and those whose habits haven't changed,there's simply not enough of them to stop the tide turning.

Perhaps they are being ran well.

 

Two near me have closed down in the last six months sadly. I suspect one of the reasons is that two big "chain pubs" have opened quite close by and appear to be taking most of the trade. The prices in the local Wetherspoons are incredible, just incredible. On a Saturday you can get "scampi, chips and peas" plus a pint for about £4.50 - how the fuck anybody can compete with that is beyond me. It's always rammed is the Wetherspoon until about 10 and then people toddle off to the more local pubs....that's no good for the locals really, as folk tend to be smashed already when they get there and so spend very little.

 

I am all for more freehouses above identikit pubs, but as The Gonzo says, a couple of quiet months and it starts getting tough for them

We've got f*cking loads of places to get a decent seekh kebab tho', and, Inshallah, I can buy three bulbs of garlic and a bunch of coriander at 7:30pm for about 37p.

There are plenty of pubs shutting around in areas that are predominantly white.

 

I'm sure you are right in a way though, as places like Horwich, being a tad incestious, have a real community/village feel about the place.  Other suburbs/districts closer to towns don't really have that community feel to them.

A shithole of a boozer sat waiting for the inevitable and blaming it on everything else is going to close soon. 100% fact.

 

We've just bought one in a leafy Cheshire suburb...a few locals complaining that their local pub has been sold and it is being redeveloped for non local people. It could easily be the Greenwood on CNR...

 

But guess what. If it was that fucking good it wouldn't be shutting.

I work on a lot of pubs all around the uk and yes a lot of loal pubs have shut down

But it's mostly the little shithouses

The big 2 at the moment are green king and m&b with green king buying a lot of the smaller chains

I've never been as busy but as said before they both are only spending on pubs

That can do food on a large scale

They both are spending a fortune and long may it continue
