My old man reckoned we used to have two train stations in town, one on Great Moor Street - before my time.

 

I do remember the main station being over the road from the present one, used to have a coal fire in the ticket office....

There were 2 lots of Manfredis, same family but different brothers (I think). One of them was godfather to one of my sisters. She didn't get free ice cream out of the deal, well not often.

 

Yep. Not sure if they were bros. or not but each had a pitch on the open market along with Sabinis. That was the biggest money spinning spot for £ taken v money shelled since you had regular passing potential customers without burning fuel. (school exits and lunch times was another but only good for 30 mins at a time and discouraged by heads and authorites)

 

Me dad used to buy from the pink manfredi situated lower down the rd towards Bolton. Then after 12 month he bought his own van and wasnt tied so got a better deal of the green manfredi further up ( about 1/2 mile) who opened a new factory. Very profitable times between 72 and 76. We went from a poor family of  mum and dad + 5 struggling to meet the mortgage to holidays abroad and a nice cars on the drive. Mind you in summer it was 7 days a week 11:30am til 10pm and the mornings prep thrown in. One Sunday in 76 he took £650 which in those days was unreal and was regularly taking £400 to £500 every Sunday during the hot summers of 75 to 76. That was one good thing about the village having the highest birth rate in the UK between 65 and 70!

Yes, Louisa had one of the market spots, always used to go to her as she'd want to ask after all our family & have a chat if there wasn't a queue (which wasn't often).
