Boltonian Memories Revisited...

Noticed Edwin P Lees has bit the dust yesterday...

What else has gone never to be seen again?

Burnden obviously...

My old man reckoned we used to have two train stations in town, one on Great Moor Street - before my time.

I do remember the main station being over the road from the present one, used to have a coal fire in the ticket office....

Anyone else with any more nostalgia?

I know it's been done to death already but...

A pint for anyone who has a picture of the budgie cage in the Arndale :)

The dog chew factory on Rose Hill near Edbro.

Some wag wrote in graffiti

"ILL SMeLL Starts Here"

and

"Ill smell ends here"

On the walls before and after the dog chew place, and the warnings were strangely accurate.

Bolton College is another landmark gone for good.

The Odeon......though to be fair, there could never be the demand for a town centre cinema nowadays !!

The old Fire Station.....I think the original plan was to keep the fancy facade, but it all got flattened.

I love all the old photos....there is a site on facefuckers that has loads

The amount of pubs in and around the town .....they were everywhere....

Is my mind playing tricks. But wasn't there a tank, or some sort of army personal vehicle on Queens Park during the 70's?

Was having a chat to an old bloke in pub the other day, talking about all the old pubs in town, what he used get up to etc.

He mentioned an area of town called the Velvet Walks which was apparently a rough as fuck, slum area. Behind the Blue Boar/Post Office. Don't know if anyone else has any info on it. Think it was demolished in the 30/40's.

Place that sticks in my memory from childhood was that scruffy little pet shop what used be down side of Griffin. Proper ramshackle little place

One of my earliest memories was passing the Odeon and a big fuck off poster of David ruening into the wolf (headshot) fro An American Werewolf in London - really shit me up that did

The cafe near the Clarence was "The Pantry" ,  a proper old fashioned cafe with a pin ball machine  & I think, a juke box. It was a well known meeting up place.

My step dad always tells me there used to be hundreds of pubs in town an its immediate surrounding area. Cant imagine that now.

Water Place, used to think it was absolutely brilliant in there. Lazer Quest, the old cinema and so many pubs that have either gone from Bradshawgate or changed names many times now, used to love my Varisty then onto Hawthorns nights.

Boydells Toymaster, my favourite shop growing up. Got all my Turtles figures and Subbuteo stuff from there haha

Kew House Chicken shop near the original Boydells - thought, in my childlike mind, it was because there was always a queue...

There was a paint shop behind - Orrells, had a elephant on the architrave...Sports shop next door, used to sell dubbin.

Proffitts; gone

Gregory and Porritts; gone?

Ridgeway Chippy.

How the fuck 'The Greyhound' (Deansgate) stays open is beyond me - probably the only pub in the town I've never had a pint in.

I didn't know she opened that up, one of my grandma's favourite stories used to be how the Queen used to close the curtains anytime the royal train passed through Bolton as she hated it haha

But then she did also say one of her old friends nearly "brought down a Zepplin" by throwing a broom handle at it
