My old man reckoned we used to have two train stations in town, one on Great Moor Street - before my time.

 

I do remember the main station being over the road from the present one, used to have a coal fire in the ticket office....

 

Anyone else with any more nostalgia?

Changing the topic somewhat - First pub you got served in? Mine was the Doffcocker - pints of Lowenbrau, full of ale and bravado went over the road to try my luck again and got promptly told to piss off...

Got served regularly in the Two Tubs in Bury from about 15. Went out for me 18th and the new bar Maid wouldn't serve me.

What was that social type club called between Mr D's and Trinity St church?  Thats where I bought my first pint, someone had hired it out and sold tickets at school.  It was fucking mayhem.  Full of 12/13 yr olds (like me) who'd never been pissed before, puking up everywhere and smashing up the toilets.  Think the police ended up being called and we all scarpered.

 

First 'proper' pub was probably Sparking Clog.

Amsterdam Bar in H circa 1983/4. It was dark and I had big busters, so it was a piece of piss.

Where was the Amsterdam Bar, don't remember that? Was an Aggy lad so didn't frequent Horwich in those days.

 

First pub though was the Toll Bar around 14/15 on the basis me and my mate reckoned no one would know us 3 miles up the road!

They  all moved over there when the Ebony Club was shut down on Folds Road. Almost opposite the Eagle & Vulcan pub nears Folds Road skoo. Clouds of Ganja smoke used to billow out of the Ebony every time the door opened. High just walking past.

Forget who mentioned the train station on Gt Moor St. Would have been around where Morrisons is and that 'Waves' place or whatever it's called (almost opposite Vava's).

 

I recall the street corner was Dawes Street and that's where Zephyr Taxi's were (the Bestway predecessor).

 

Now then, theatre opposite the current GPO? Was that the Hippodrome (next tert Hen & Chicks)? There was another big theatre opposite Ye Olde Pastie Shoppe - either the Grand or the Theatre Royal (they may have been next to each other?).

Waterplace (RIP) now a Morrisons Petrol station after the courts service pulled out of building on there and Fat Cliff gave in to Morrisons

Wimpy (later Kingburger) on the Square before it became the cafe of choice for chain-smoking coffin dodgers...

 

Best burger bar none, complete with fried onions, oh  yes...

I also bought some Soviet jumpers from Zukies which was opposite the market place. Same time as Rip Rap.

 

At school we used to nip in Geds chippy on Wigan road. Not the best chips what I remember though.

 

Or down to the pastie shop down on ladybridge where Grotbags would serve you.

Been trying remember name of the shop on Back Cheapside that sold Spliffy and Naff Co54 clobber aswell as mixtapes. Used pick up loads of flyers from there along with Beat Street Records.
