The third round draw has Bolton away to the winners of Wednesday's second round match between Exeter City and Oxford United. Both of them scored 6 in the first round.

Some entertaining ties, like Arsenal v WBA and Everton v Villa.

If Met Police win at Yeovil (also on Wednesday) there will be an interesting pairing:

Burnley v Met Police.

Met Police have a youth team?

How does that work?

Young offenders. They nick anyone with talent a day before a game.

Apparently they have teams down to under 7s, so I suspect it's on the community relations budget.

Reminds me when I was managing Stretford's British League athletics team. Met Police won the Southern League and gained promotion through an inter-regional match to the British League. The Southern clubs were up in arms, saying it's run like a military team. Their manager, Andy Norman (who went on to make GB a top class team after fading over the previous post-war generations) said " Is it the fact that we are a Closed Club that you object to?" The response was "Yes" (with bells on), so he said "Will you accept us if I undertake to change to make it an Open Club?" This offer was accepted enthusiastically.

They changed the rules, so that the club was open to all serving police officers, not just the Met. As it was no longer restricted to one employer it was technically no longer a Closed Club, but they were able to add sprinters from Lancashire and a Thrower from Northumberland, etc.

I remember at that time that my club were a few divisions above them we only ever met them in a mid week league (Middlesex league). They were always full of cadets from Hendon. Thought that was how all their teams worked and they were signed up when at the college?

Btw Malcolm, wasn't Andy Norman at Shaftesbury in NW London?

He was the youngest Sergeant in the Met on appointment.

But he blotted his copybook at the Notting Hill Carnival by arresting a black guy, who asked him what is was for.

He replied "We'll think of something by the time you're at the Station" - not a clever thing to say to a solicitor!

Only because he was running the Met athletics that he avoided dismissal, but was blocked from further promotion.

Also possibly helped that the Commissioner of that era was a former star athlete!

So he was a desk sergeant at Bromley while looking after Southern Counties promotions at Crystal Palace.

He left the police to become Promotions Officer for British Athletics around 1980.

Left that job after passing unfortunate comment about a journalist's relationship with a married woman he was coaching, which led to the journalist committing suicide.

He is now dead himself.

Not aware of any connection with Shaftesbury Barnet, although I see there is an athlete of that name with Enfield & Haringey.

Hopefully a repeat of our 3rd Round win at Oxford four years ago. Fairly confident we have never played Exeter in this competition.

Exeter it is! (and Met Police for Burnley).

Youth Cup at Exeter tonight....

Burnley got turned over by Met Police last night, equalising in the 120th minute and then taking the penalty shoot-out 6-5.

Posted

the GK hero was Callum Lunn - he saved the 5th pen to level at 4-4 and then the 7th to win 6-5.

Strangely, Burnley had a player called Metz.

Also Met appeared to have 8 players named on the bench, against 5 for Burnley.

Grounds for an appeal?

3 of them undercover?
