As one who travels to the far corners of the globe to visit mosques (yes, I do still have the evidence) the last thing one would expect is that you in particular would have any problems with the new neighbours either in person or in bricks and mortar.

You say that like it's something I'd be ashamed of. Stick it up if you like?

 

I visited mosques, temples and churches on me travels, it's not like I was on the Hajj. The one you're on about was the Masjid Negara in Kuala Lumpur. Me and my ex Mrs (32a - one of the many reasons it didn't last) turned up and asked if we could look around. We were very warmly welcomed but asked to wear some robes as I was in shorts and t-shirt and my Mrs was in a short skirt and a boob tube. Seeing as we were on their patch - it seemed pretty reasonable and we've done the same in countless Buddhist temples round SE Asia. Mark of respect to your hosts and to be honest, we weren't really suitably dressed for the country, never mind a holy building.

 

The Imam gave us the grand tour and invited us up to his office for some tea. We chatted to him for about an hour about Islam and Malaysia and I talked about being an atheist and the UK. We also had a good natter about 9/11 which was a fairly recent event at the time. We disagreed about a great deal but were both respectful of each other. He gave me a copy of the Koran as we left and put his email address in - asking me to send him a message if I had any questions about Islam etc. I read about a third before I gave up on account that it's just as much a load of bollocks as the bible just with different character names. Never had the heart to email and tell him though.

 

All in all a top way to spend a couple of hours and if all mosques were as open and welcoming to infidels, then I'm sure the world would be a much happier place. Not as good as when I spent an hour teaching a young Buddhist monk how to swear and chatting about football - but still pretty good. I had a robe on then as well! :-)

This tiny island and it's position in the world today was built upon its monarchy and the people they ruled. Yeah we could be insignificant like Belgium but we are not, we are the United Kingdom, our language is universal, we've given the world so many things (as well as taking some whilst painting the map Empire pink) but whilst I'm pretty fucking proud of that I wouldn't watch a royal wedding if there was a super league game on Sky at the same time.

 

Most antimonarchists I've come across are missing something in life and cast an envious eye over the so called elite at every opportunity. That's life, there is a food chain in everything from baby hedgehogs to grizzly bears.
