May 16, 201610 yr All those heathens who won't bend on one knee, would you accept a knighthood or other such award if offered? To be fair I'm more in Kent's camp than anything but would happily become a Sir if the chance ever arose. Not for the title per se but for the doors it would open. I get the impression that the Royals have a lot more influence on our society, politics, business etc than a lot of folk realise I'm happy for them to be here, as an historic tradition type of thing, but think they should be all about public service. I don't think that's the case at the moment. The two Princes, here before me, seem allreet though. That's what I said now
May 17, 201610 yr Over the past few weeks, I was becoming more and more alarmed as I seemed to be agreeing more and more with Cheese. Thankfully, this thread has fucked any more of that disturbing development off. You can wank on for ever about cap doffing, 'unelected positions' blah, blah, blah (especially the Commies on here) but no system has ever worked better because no system can possibly produce an independent arbiter anything like as neutral as Her Majesty and whoever will succeed her. Republics have Presidents which are generally (not always) elected by politicians and are therefore always prone to political bias. The great thing is that it doesn't matter how much whining the likes of Kent, Cheese and other anti-Royalists spew forth, our Royal Family will be around for centuries yet. William and particularly Harry will ensure their popularity for the next few decades. GSTQ.
May 17, 201610 yr Ah the 'commie' line again (your politics are mired in the 1970's). Handing down positions of privilege via birthright? Sounds like North Korea or Cuba to me. Declaring dessenting voices enemies of the state? I think you've more in common with them than I have! You really think the Queen is an arbiter? She's not by the way - and even if she was, what do you think is special in her DNA and those of her offspring that means they're better able to pass judgement on important matters than anybody else? And no matter how quintessentially English and spiffing you think Wills and Harry are, remember that you're likely to have Charles on your bank notes before either of those two. And a two year old boy before Harry. No thanks. I'm out on account of the fact that it's not 1588.
May 17, 201610 yr Why get bothered by the fact they are born into a particular family. Which ever nation you look at there will be families with money, power and influence. The princes or whoever can do nothing about their heritage, but can only seek to make something of their lives. I doubt it's all sweetness and light either, a lack of freedom to live what we would call a normal life must have its drawbacks. Yes money and title may bring them lots that most others could only dream about, but so what. Respecting them for the people they actually are is all that matters, and you don't have to bow or doff your cap to do that. On the other hand if they're cunts then, in this day and age particularly, they'd be on the road to fucking things up for the family big time. Edited May 17, 201610 yr by Tonge moor green jacket

May 18, 201610 yr Given they are born into this elitist privileged life it is amazing how the actions of the younger royals seems more in touch with what the unwashed want from their leadership than politicians. Boris and Farage can pull as many pints in as many pubs as they want, but Harry's involvement in the Invictus games to give support to ex service men resonates as genuine, ironically as they are not elected it is easier to do something as they are not worrying about the next by election in Chipping Sodbury. We live in a world where the lives of the rich and famous are plastered all over the media, the two princes and Kate as much as anyone on the planet and they match up pretty well. No point complaining that they only have this position because 500 years ago, their relatives happened to win done battle, the same principle applies across the world in every political system. Just because sheik yourmoney relatives parked his camel near an spot that was oil rich has meant certain families are rich, in the west money is passed down through generations and hence we are faced with the possibility of Trump running the world - best case ever against democracy ? In Cuba Fidel Castro was succeeded by his brother. I do not doff my cap out of any sense of obligation, but out of respect for what they bring to the country, yes they are in an incredibly privileged position but they are handling that position with incredible grace and are doing a wonderful job which helps our great country to stand out in the world.

Some good points Ani. You could argue that the Invictus Games is the modern equivalent of The Duke of Edinburgh award scheme or The Princes Trust. There's no reason why it had to be created by a royal though. Just look at the 'warrior games' who they nicked the idea off. It's laudible, don't get me wrong, but there's laudible things happening every day. It's not a reason to accept an unelected head of state. In my eyes anyway. And I take your point about money. Having money makes it much easier to get the right education and meet the right people and to therefore have a better chance of reaching a position of power. That's something we need to work to change, but again, not an argument for an unelected head of state. Even given that, the huge difference between the two is, despite money helping get you there - it's not a divine right, people will still have to vote you in (something which hasn't happened with Trump, yet at least) and they can also just as easily vote you back out again. The Royals are in irrespectively and can't be removed even if they're bonkers. Like I say - William and Harry seem like decent lads. But then my Brother is a decent lad, so are loads of my friends and family. In fact being a decent lad should really be the least we expect of somebody shouldn't it? Despite all this - I do reserve the right to bristle with indignation and argue with foreigners who express the same view - socially conditioned you see! :-)
May 18, 201610 yr Bollocks. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. GSTQ. The horse and cart wasn't broken in King Egbert's era. But instead of 'not fixing it' we improved on it and now we're driving cars. The monarchy we didn't fix and now we're left with this bunch of parasitic inbreeds. VLR :-)

About 1 in 5 - hardly a tiny monority, but sadly a minority nonetheless. https://yougov.co.uk/news/2015/09/08/monarchy-here-stay/ And as for Camargue White. I'm far too patriotic to up sticks and leave just because I don't like the new neighbours ;-) Edited May 18, 201610 yr by kent_white
May 18, 201610 yr Isn't that the point of them? As a royal family, yes. But the lads themselves aren't responsible for that, as the saying goes you can't choose your family. All they can do is make something of themselves, and they seem to be doing that.
May 18, 201610 yr All they can do is make something of themselves. William can sit on the sofa smoking smuggled fags all day like a Johnny Folder and still end up as King of England.

May 18, 201610 yr Seems a decent bloke does Harry, pity he's a Hewiitt, nailed on as log as I have hole in my arse.
May 19, 201610 yr I'm far too patriotic to up sticks and leave just because I don't like the new neighbours ;-) As one who travels to the far corners of the globe to visit mosques (yes, I do still have the evidence) the last thing one would expect is that you in particular would have any problems with the new neighbours either in person or in bricks and mortar.

May 19, 201610 yr Harry has a pad down in the Cotswolds that he uses almost exclusively for shagging top notch lasses whenever the mood takes him. That aside, the royals can't win at times. But for 7p a month or whatever it costs me I'd rather have them than not. The Queen could look at it as a jail sentence in many ways, having to sake hands and smell fresh paint 5 days a week is probably no less repetitive than working in a call centre. Just because she has a few castles doesn't mean she's a stranger to work on a Monday like the rest of us.
