They are decent lads. Doesn't mean either of them should hold an unelected position as head of state and be handsomely paid for the privilege though.

They could always stand as a candidate - and then if the people wanted a Windsor in the hot seat - they could vote for them. If that was the case - fair do's. I might even vote for one of them myself.

They might be unelected but they are probably more popular than any elected representative could ever hope to be. They hold no real power no; that belongs to the PM. So for me they can crack on doing their thing and a damn good job they seem to be doing of it.

I'll never understand folks readiness to be subservient. And not even choosing to be subservient to someone - just allowing it to happen by tradition. Like I've said before - there's no difference between believing that the Royal Family have some authority over you to believing some Ayatollah does. By the 'Grace of God' my arse. It's bonkers in our day and age. An antiquated system for a bygone age - like not having goal line technology! :-)

I suppose. Depends what you think they actually bring to the country. To me they're simply tabloid fodder, but with a disturbing amount of influence over Parliament. The "tourism" argument is nonsense, as nobody comes to the UK to see THEM. They come to see the mansions and castles in which they reside. 

 

As has been expressed in this thread, the princes do seem like nice lads. So do lots of other rich/famous people who have a team of PR agents controlling everything they do and say infront of the media. Doesn't mean they should also be in positions of power and influence.

I'd say Yanks come because they are "here"  - have met a few in my time and they always seem excited that they exist, and you know how popular Diana as for example - I doubt there's the same enthusiasm for Versaille just because Louis XIV once lived there.  I can't translate that into £££s but am sure it helps.

Am more interested in how you go about refusing to bow to them, or how kent frees himself from his subservient state of mind, which am guessing is something like drawing a tache on the queen's face on the back of a fiver.

Just that I have already outlined. This country, for its many issues, generally works.

 

Why change what works? We might be better off as a republic, but if it isn't broke, then don't change it for the sake of change.

Must admit, whilst I'm anti-Royal, I do fuck all about it. I should probably adopt something closer to your attitude, but seeing people fawn over them as though they're sent from God makes me a little bit sick in my mouth.

 

Although I will say - being pro-Royal is basically admitting that other people are better/more deserving than you, simply because they were born into a certain family.

It's about democracy for me. We either are one or we aren't. Same reason I'd do away with an unelected second chamber.

 

If you want to call our head of state a King or Queen then fine. They can live at Buckingham Palace if they want and even wear a crown and a stupid furry jacket if it makes people feel better. But they should be head of state by will of the people, not birthright.

 

If Charles was a politician banging on about talking to plants and homeopathy - he wouldn't get anywhere near an office as powerful as he's likely to hold in the very near future. It's not going to make any difference either way as like has already been pointed out - they won't be going anywhere in a hurry. Partly because it's political suicide to even mention the possibility of a referendum on their future. Therein lies their power.

To be fair I'm more in Kent's camp than anything but would happily become a Sir if the chance ever arose.  Not for the title per se but for the doors it would open.

 

I get the impression that the Royals have a lot more influence on our society, politics, business etc than a lot of folk realise

 

I'm happy for them to be here, as an historic tradition type of thing, but think they should be all about public service.  I don't think that's the case at the moment.
