Fidel Castro

He stood up to a more powerful continental neighbour and locked up homosexuals, I thought you would have been an admirer.

Suggest you give up thinking then.

I went to Cuba 12 years ago, just before Fidel Castro handed power over to his brother Raul. I loved the place and the people.

I wonder if anything will actually change now Fidel has died....

It's hard to judge due to 'el bloqueo'. But you could argue the Americans are equally to blame for the poverty experienced there.

If that gets lifted then I agree - better times could be ahead for the people of Cuba.

It could improve, especially if a goodly number return from abroad with their wealth and skills

If the Revolution was so great; how come 15% of the country emigrated? (many desperately)

I'm not sure anyone claims it was great

Just setting one set of barbaric bastards for another

I didn't say it was great. But in answer to your question, I don't know - I'd have to read up on it. But I'd guess a fair amount of those belonged to or were associated with the previous regime. A proportion would no doubt have been opposed to the new one. And the remainder were perhaps economic migrants tired of living in poverty due to being stuck in a failing republic which was not helped by half a decade of economic sanctions.

As discussed previously, Cuba will start to modernise, but in some ways will lose some of its charm.

I'm not saying you did.

Many people do seem to claim how wonderful he and Cuba was, including the usual suspects! (Corbyn, Livingstone)

There's a balance to everything BD. He wasn't universally wonderful or universally terrible for the people of Cuba. He was an incredible chap though who lived an extraordinary life.

Interesting this- saw a brief report: they've a tremendous health care system for all, yet on the other hand many people are poor. Depends on what you use to measure quality of life.

Had him in my deadpool since 2004 ish.

He clung on for a while

First name terms? How come you never mentioned him on the "Who Do You Know Who's Famous?" thread?
