The larger project actually got more than that. The mails figures have not been challenged by the Guardian or any of its contributors. Believe me when I say those yoghurt knitters would be all over this if it were not true.

January 17, 20179 yr I will be in the minority on here but I would rather we give aid overseas. If you travel you see what proper poverty looks like and it's nothing like folk face in the UK.
January 17, 20179 yr Very simplistic I know as its not easy to just roll up and do it without some mad dictator or stone age tribe wanting to chop your head off regardless, but the combined costs of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars (courtesy of dinnertime google - £10bn and £37bn to the UK alone and 3 trillion dollars to the US) is a fuckload of money. Had that gone on improving hearts, minds, infrastructure, education, aid etc - would there be a million* people wanting to blow normal people up and would the world be a better place? *rough guess - you get the picture... January 17, 20179 yr Interesting debate about the Ethiopian money being for changing attitudes towards women. We all agree fgm etc is abhorrent, but the methodology is perverse. Surely we as the cash givers have some say: how about we'll fund water systems, irrigation and help with food production; in return for you stopping chopping into girls' bits. Make it part of the law and punish those who carry on. If they don't then they don't get the cash. Heard this about NGOs before and also stories of local officials creaming of money (Uganda I think). If they want our money they have to accept our people properly scrutinising what goes on and be prepared to modify ancient behaviours.
