I was watching an early morning documentary on Sky Arts (hello sailor) about Christie's, Sotheby's etc.

Now I'm far from a philistine - I am a patron of the arts and artist both (multi-disciplinary regular artist and piss-artist nonpareil) but watching this, there was an auction a few years back and one version of the same subject sold for $52,887,500.

Was it:

Correggio - Leda e il Cigno (1530/31).

Or

Cy Twombly - Leda and the Swan (1962).

Have a guess which?

I can never decide in certain cases whether art sometimes robs the rich to feed the poor and artists laugh at rich fuckers being rinsed.

Then you hear of a Basquiat painting bought by a rich twat for $19,000 selling for $55m and come to the conclusion...

Have a read if you want, don't if you think it'll bore you. I was very lucky, I found it amazing, and really interesting. I knew very little about Munch but so fascinating, and some of Emin's work i loved. In fact, got a lovely print for Christmas from this exhibition.

It got middling reviews, as above but its worth your time having a read about this part of her work. For me, she has got better with age and love her later work.

Id say there are loads of opinions already on this thread and that's a good thing in my view. I guess its what you define as understanding, as unlike say an equation, there isn't a finite answer, or indeed a right or wrong.

Is there pretension, yes. Do.i like all modern art, no as there are so many different types. To.me its like saying i don't like punk because I'm not a fan of The Damned.

Got a few bits and pieces of artwork. 

One from a fashion/design student I worked with, one from an Egyptian beastiality loving textile student, and various other stuff.

All significantly more impressive than some scribble of a 'swan' or a soiled bed, no doubt worth a lot less, but I like them, which I suppose is the point.

 

About 5 years ago I was working for Dmitry Rybolovlev, he was going through the largest divorce ever at the time (4.5 billion) and I ended up in charge of ‘hiding’ some of his private art collection.

little did I know how much this would sell for a few years later

The TV documentary about the Greenhalghs, "The Artful Codgers " was tremendous.  Coming from less than half a mile away in B/X, I share the locals' amusement & a bit of pride !!
