Conscription

Raised its head on the news I see.

Doubt it would ever happen, and I know most of us on here are either too old, too fucked or too good looking to be risked in battle.

But my lad is 17, and would probably qualify.

Not sure I’d want that.

Maybe it could be tied in with some sort of rehabilitation for young offenders.

Or for petty crimes give them a choice ... prison or army.

Could be life changing for some.

So the Wagner Group then? 😁

Don't see the problem if trained to a high standard.

They're a "decent level" mercenary group. Some hardened bastards.

Not sure how many conscripts they'd take!

Boat people types......2 years in service, then they can have a UK Passport, and be allowed to stay here. This includes all men, women and children

So they'd be in the Navy, having already sailed the Channel?

Weren't they taking prisoners with the offer of if you last a year then you go free

Then some did survive and got nicked on spurious charges and chucked back in prison

I thought we were on about convicts?

Still applies mate- I don't think that lot takes vast numbers of rookies, more like experienced guys who get well paid for doing Russia's unofficial bidding in places like Africa.

Putin et al have chucked lots of crims into the grinder as part of their "conscription" process.

Ah OK ... did say petty crimes though.

What's a patriot?

Someone who lives in Benidorm. Or Australia. Obviously

I always find this a little disrespectful to our armed forces. People who choose to sign up for whatever reason are lumped in with people who have broken the law and don't have a choice. Don't know what you do for a living but I would be pretty pissed off if everyone kept saying that criminals should be sent out to do my job.

This.

Theres a reason why it’s difficult to get into the military with a criminal record.

Think people need to realise what calibre of person it actually takes to be any of the forces.

Its a fucking insult that people are mentioning convicts or your average wayward fucker.

These lads and lasses are above anyone. What they put themselves through to even get through the door is ridiculous.

Discipline isnt something taught.

I agree with most of that, but discipline is literally "taught" in the Military. It's probably the main thing they hammer into any recruit. It's why ex-armed forces sometimes struggle to re-adjust to civvy life where everyone fumbles through existance in a state of constant chaos.

First time I'm ever agreeing with Cheesey 🙂

Don't you think military training could put them on the straight and narrow?

I'm talking youngsters 16 - 21 and not long/old-timers.

Perhaps a military type approach would suit some, but that is different to letting them straight into the military.

There are no doubt many examples of people who had lost their way a bit and joining up sorted them out and gave them purpose.

I think that's why some older folk would talk about the benefit of national service, and it has raised its head again with regard to a lack of discipline within society. Some advocating a sort of scheme that isn't military based, but of a social contribution that youngsters have to do for a period.

There are a few who they do allow in, they obviously want to join though. To allow hundreds/thousands in because they’re being made to is a totally different scenario and one that wouldn’t work.

Anyway, just to prove that I’m a better patriot than the cowardy custard gammons, I’ve signed up for the RAF today.

I’ve watched a YouTube video of a chap flying a euro fighter so I reckon I’m ready.

You lot can stay here and pretend you’ve got gout

Just read. Conscription was introduced under the National Service Act.

So it’s the same thing

The last intake of National Service conscripts were 17-21 in 1960 so around 81-84 years old now. Who the fuck is calling for “a return” of National Service?

No one really, some army general has suggested it, that’s about it.
