Working abroad

I’ve wanted to do this for years- since college, however life didn’t turn out like this- kids, mortgage, marriage etc… I’ll soon be mortgage free, and still relatively young at 44. I’ll soon complete my UEFA C Licence, which is basic entry for holiday firms etc, but I’ll look to expand on that.

Be a couple more years, but any suggestions from anyone as to where? I’ve no language skills other saying thanks in about 7 different ways… always fancied Portugal for 6 months. Looking at lifestyles etc

Oh, I’m taking the wife and I am a ginger- so rules out pretty much everywhere by Siberia

GERMANY doesn’t count

Ok, bit odd but ok

Odd for not visiting places where the locals attack you? Not sure it is really? Seems quite sensible. Especially for a man with a young family?

plenty of places to visit. Barcelona is ok but not worth any kind of hassle to be paying a fortune for a beer.

As I say, the housing issue is huge and I think as a local you have every right to push back and say enough.

That is fine. They should be defending themselves.

likewise they can’t be moaning when people bin it off.

I certainly wouldn’t be taking my family or friends to areas where people are protesting about us being there.

airbnb is a massive problem and I hate it. My dream forever home has become A bit shit with the 8 double beds and sleeps 20+ airbnb advert which means there is a hen party every week. sadly councils don’t give a shit and allow it to happen. Change the rules to stop being able to rent out using different rules to those of the residents. The rules I have to stick to to rent my apartment on long term let’s are mental when I could do airbnb in my house with no care for safety

Some do - but that's not a reason it shouldn't be opposed.

I think it's a bit myopic to dismiss locals concerns regarding over tourism and the impact on their lives.

No one is dismissing it. They can crack on and I merely mentioned I’ll not go to help em out.

The elephant in the room is what effect on Spains economy would a significant slump in tourism have? The Catalans might not care about what happens elsewhere in Spain but the awful youth unemployment figures would go from awful to tragic very quickly for a very large section of this country.

The trickle down effect on cafes, restaurants, heladerias, hotels, markets, food producers etc. would be catastrophic. Spains economy overall would take a very significant hit.

This lot must be extremely excited about these attacks on tourists

Yeah If tourism is your cash cow then you deliver hospitality. Spain is a super place with great people but if they get to a point where they no longer like it then off I’ll pop somewhere else. Like I’m sure many others will.

My plan/dream is to retire over there lock stock and barrel (FPO still needs working on and wants a holiday home currently while staying here) but would happily try sunnier climates elsewhere if needs be.

Do they get a taxi in Brighton for a pub 100 yards away or walk like sensible types 😂

Croatia is starting to look more and more attractive mate. Campania the logical choice for me due to family connections and a home for 10,000 euros (inland) is very tempting. Just don't fancy further encounters with the Camorra!

Having said all of that, very significant family right here so hoping this is just a storm in a water pistol.

We could buy a holiday home in Horwich for match days 😁

Cheers for the digital nomad info.

As others have suggested, we’d probably, keep our house in the UK but rent it out – and use the rental income to rent in Spain rather than buy. Hopefully once cancels the other out – maybe with a few quid left over for bills, etc.

Mrs probably wouldn’t wanna continue working but I’d not be able to afford to retire.

As for the £30K-£50K in the account, guessing we could cobble that together if need be.

The main info I need would be schooling. We are considering this in the next couple of years when the youngest would be ready for high school. Can we simply just fly out there, rent somewhere and just find a school for her whilst I continue to work? Or there many more hurdles to jump through? Are there schools simply for ex Pats? Are they free (not hopefull!)

Go for it - I've kept people happily housed from Barbados to Valencia 😁

Think she would need to know spainish unless you pay for the international schools

If you’re including going away for a week or two selling paper it’s a piece of piss. Live in a hotel. See customers for a couple of days, relax for a couple of days, relax with customers for a couple of days and so on until your flight home.
Remember some airport chocolate for the girls at work and you’ll be reet.

Sure longer term might be different.

Anyone thinking of moving abroad as well as the financial side of it needs to look at what stops you ;

1 Kids

2. Parents

3. Pets

Then as you get older it becomes

1. Kids

2. Gran kids

3. Pets

we have talked about it but won't go till her mum pops the clogs or whilst dog is alive. Kids have moved out but that means they might have their own and sure our lass won't go then. She certainly would not go whilst her mum is still going , we are both same about the dog.

I miss my family and I only live 200 odd miles away. Can't imagine moving abroad and only seeing them a couple of times a year

My little sister has spent most of her life in Mexico. Just recently moved back to the uk a year or so ago. Completely alien to her being an adult here.

I wouldn’t recommend Mexico as a next destination for living though.

I wouldn't even go there for the 2026 World Cup. The Badlands.

Pets can move abroad.
Parents and children/grandchildren, another matter, but sure older kids would be happy with the chance of regular trips abroad to visit. Grandchildren can come for the 6 weeks holidays!

Being away from family and friends is the hardest bit by far.

I've been away 13 years and it doesn't get easier when you consider:

Parents aren't getting any younger

Sister now has two little ones

As do we. Plus their other grandparents and auntie aren't local either.

But you've just got to weigh it up. Kids miss out on family time but live an easy life on a tropical island, go to the beach after school, are bilingual, have a wider world view from international school etc.

Plus what YOU want. If we have to move home we will. The kids will adapt and I'd be miserable once the novelty wore off.

We stayed in Bolton for 2 months during the heatwave in 2018. And it was ace but temporary and obviously not reality.

It's not for lots of folk and understandably so. But, if you've not sold up you can always up and fuck off home if you need to.

Depends on age of pets , no way our dog could cope with the heat.

Parents (her mum) getting too old to travel and then if she did having her with us for two weeks solid would end up in murder.

There is an age thing there and tbh in next few years  they are both unlikely to be about

Kids and Grandkids slightly different, think would rather be there to be part of the grandkids growing up. Way kids have carried on last 2-3 weeks they can fuck right off 😎😂

It all depends on your original reason for stepping over the edge. Our kids future was the number one priority for us. We have never wavered from this goal and were determined to see it through from the moment our feet touched the tarmac at Sydney airport. It has worked out way better than we could ever have imagined.

You need to mentally invest 100% . In our experience, much easier for the male in the relationship than the female. Clinging to apron strings is a lifetime addiction for the fairer sex - not only in our experience but for 90% plus of those we have discussed this issue with down under.

We know one poor sod from Oldham who went there and back four times before they finally settled in a tranquil backwater called Australind. This was all the doing of his wife and her mother/sister relationship and it cost them an absolute fucking fortune.

It's a stark choice but some folk arrive with a "I'm going to make a go of this whatever the fuck happens"  attitude and others "we can always head home if we need to". Goes back to my first sentence in this post.
