  • won our first ever World Cup game, a proud day for me after enduring the dark ages of Canadian men's football during the 90s and 2000s. Easily the best team we have ever fielded.

Decent save from South Africa's keeper that. Very much reminiscent of some of his performances for Mamelodi Sundowns in recent years 😁

should keeper save that? it's a class strike from Mbappe like.

Yeah, he should have saved it.

Great first half here, Norway Iraq

Know what you mean - for me there is contact, and with a VAR referral I just always expect the ref to change his mind and give it.

VAR shouldn't be getting involved in that IMO. Not clear and obvious.

However, once he was told to go and review I was surprised, but pleased, he didn't switch because of a fractional contact on his trailing foot. The game shouldn't be subject to microscopic re-refereeing

Fair point.

Trouble is, what constitutes "clear and obvious"?

It's very much open to interpretation and as a statement isn't clear and obvious.

True. That subjectivity is another reason I'd bin VAR

I like it for off-sides, as there is no interpretation.

Oh, and of course it's great for identifying a clear foul by a striker, on a defender, before going onto score at Wembley... 😀

Good highlights from the Argentina and Norway games.

Welcome to the party Messi and Haaland.

I think in that instance Mbappe is running at pace and so even fractional contact would be enough to bring someone down. It looked clearly a pen in real time and those get given 99/100. The slow motion re-refereeing in this instance came from the ref decided that Mbappe initiated the contact with a defender behind him, while running through on goal at 20mph.

But I'm against VAR so I'm happy enough for the ref to stick with his on field decision, even if it was wrong.

Worryingly I have found myself thinking I don't mind the VAR on corners though.

refreshing to see a ref stick with his own decision

he let that game flow great

No idea how the ref managed to review that and not give a pen. It looked a stonewall one in real time. Baffling.

If he’d said there was no clear cut contact, potentially I could have understood not giving it. The replays I saw were not entirely conclusive.

But to say it wasn’t given because Mbappe initiated contact was ridiculous.

Absolutely.

Just watched the Iraq highlights.

By christ did they cause some problems for Norway's defence.

A lot of naivety in their own back line too.

I'm not so sure Norway will be as strong as their initial billing on that showing.

It was only highlights though.

Personal opinions and all that. He's high up the list that's for certain. Top of the tree for me will always be another Argie.

Have to admit that I’ve enjoyed every game that I’ve watched so far and have watched a fair few highlights on iPlayer

Me too.

Really enjoying it so far

Can’t think where I heard it. Possibly on a podcast but it was a discussion about so many teams being allowed into the finals. Argument for it was that it becomes a ‘festival’ of football and these lower rated teams just go for it with some ‘no fear’ football. Got to agree with it imo. Not seeing any boring matches so far
