bwfc_sue Posted October 13, 2006 Posted October 13, 2006 I cannot seem to access my hotmail emails and internet explorer?? Have been downloading some music if that's likely to be a cause? Have run broadband medic and that says my internet connection is fine (obvioulsy so, as I can access WW). Done a system restore and virus scan and that has not solved the problem. When I try to access my emails/internet explorer I just get 'page cannot be displyed' HELP! Someone......anyone! Quote

ZiggyStardust Posted October 14, 2006 Posted October 14, 2006 (edited) I can't even open any browser, where's Ziggy when you need him, I'll offer him a Sunday roast for a quick fix! Despite my inbuilt reluctance to help anyone who bares male buttocks at me ... here goes ... in IE, go to tools > Internet Options > Connections. Click on the LAN button. Ensure the 'Use Proxy' is UNTICKED then click on start, hit RUN on NT/200/XP: type in CMD and hit the enter key. on 95/98/ME type in COMMAND and hit the enter key You will get a black box (oo-err) with a flashing prompt. type in 'PING WWW.YAHOO.COM' if you get 4 replies back as such: Reply from 209.73.186.238: bytes=32 time=217ms TTL=53 Reply from 209.73.186.238: bytes=32 time=186ms TTL=53 Reply from 209.73.186.238: bytes=32 time=179ms TTL=52 Reply from 209.73.186.238: bytes=32 time=203ms TTL=52 then the connection is fine and IE is screwed, if you get the following or similar: Ping request could not find host www.yahoo.com. Please check the name and try again. then the DNS is stuffed. Try these and post the results back here. And less of the buttocks Edited October 14, 2006 by ZiggyStardust Quote
bwfc_sue Posted October 15, 2006 Author Posted October 15, 2006 I know it must be easy Ziggy, but after the 'ensure proxy is unticked' I got lost! Quote
ZiggyStardust Posted October 18, 2006 Posted October 18, 2006 I know it must be easy Ziggy, but after the 'ensure proxy is unticked' I got lost! Ok after you ensure proxy is unticked .... Click on the START button (bottom left corner normally) Click on RUN from the menu that appears. A box will appear, depending on which version of windows you are running type one of the following in, then press the enter key: Windows 95,98,ME : type COMMAND then enter key Windows NT, 2000, 2003, XP : type CMD then enter key (If you are unsure as to which version of windows it is, try both) You will get a black box (oo-err) with a flashing prompt. At this prompt type in 'PING WWW.YAHOO.COM' (without the quotes) then press enter if you get 4 replies back as such: Reply from 209.73.186.238: bytes=32 time=217ms TTL=53 Reply from 209.73.186.238: bytes=32 time=186ms TTL=53 Reply from 209.73.186.238: bytes=32 time=179ms TTL=52 Reply from 209.73.186.238: bytes=32 time=203ms TTL=52 then the connection is fine and IE is screwed, if you get the following or similar: Ping request could not find host www.yahoo.com. Please check the name and try again. then the DNS is stuffed. Once you have tried these, reply to this thread with the results, and from there we should be able to help, after we know the problem. bwfc_sue Posted October 18, 2006 Author Posted October 18, 2006 OK, I got the "Ping request could not find host www.yahoo.com. Please check the name and try again." So the DNS is stuffed. What is a DNS? If I use NTL Broadband Medic to test my internet connection, it comes back fine and I can get online by using that, but there is no thing at the top with back, forward, refresh thing etc (is it called a tool bar?) Casino Posted October 18, 2006 Posted October 18, 2006 sue, if you're on ntl, is it by cable modem, or set top box? Quote
Casino Posted October 18, 2006 Posted October 18, 2006 Cable just check something the light on the right hand side - i think - rdy (ready), is it on, steady? Quote
bwfc_sue Posted October 18, 2006 Author Posted October 18, 2006 Yes, it is on. The problem is not actually with NTL as it works fine on this old laptop, I fear it's something I've done to my new one Quote
junot Posted October 18, 2006 Posted October 18, 2006 Cable I usually solve any ntl problems from the ntl: hell forum http://forums.ntlhell.co.uk/ You can usually find someone else with the same problem or someone who will offer to help. Some of the ntl employees who use the forum have been helpful in the past. Quote
