Then we got on a bus at the end of Green Street.

The only "whitey" on it was a very old gentleman. He was gripping his seat so tight. I looked at him and thought "this guy probably fought in the war for this country - and he must been heartbroken at the state its now in". The bus must have had over 100 people on it and we were in the minority. I was shocked.

This is meant to be the capital of our country - and it was like being in Mogadishu - I even swear I saw a downed Black Hawk at one point!

Alot of them were not speaking English to one another on the Barking Road/Green Street area so I would have to say, no, they are not English. To not speak English as a first language in this country puts the person themself at a disadvantage work/education wise and therefore no wonder immigrants who do not speak English have less job opportunities. English is and for the sake of all, will remain, the mother tongue of this country, so it must be learnt for the benefit of all. That is not a racist comment, it is a statement of fact.

I quite support the Portuguese / Spanish who have had their towns and seaside resorts infested with UK citizens who have emigrated to these places - they are clearly in their right to feckin' "raise issues" like we do.

Or was it because he prefers to sit holding his seat? Or maybe you weren't comfortable and you are assuming every "whitey" thinks like you? I wouldn't use the phrase "darky" - but I know that older people do (Ron Atkinson - the generation he was from and before them) - hence I used the term "whitey" to self-describe the old man. And right or wrong - there is no reason why that fella did not feel at unease at some of the people around him - who, regardless of colour - looked very intimidating - but nonetheless their colour did add to this. Did the SAS wear white when they stormed the Iranian Embassy or did they were black? Another dumb as fck comment I guess. The road we were on was straight without corners. He was sat firmly in his seat - thus I presumed he was gripping from fear. Maybe he just had a tight grip - who knows.

Why should I not be shocked to find a street in London - of about 2 miles long without any white people? Especially in the East End, very, very close to West Ham's ground which I was always lead to believe was a "typically Cockney area".

Out of the 5 of us - all with reasonable jobs, upbringing, backgrounds, etc - none of us where at ease and none of us saw this as a typical cockney area. All of us made a comment (our group consisted of international businessman, police ossifer, teacher, company director, tour guide) on what we saw and how we felt. 3 of the group live in London.

He was sat firmly in his seat - thus I presumed he was gripping from fear. Maybe he just had a tight grip - who knows.

 

I imagine that he was a local and probably used to the local environ. It may be that he remembers the 70s and started clutching his seat when a bunch of Bolton fans got on the bus and started staring at him.
