There is no doubting allardyces achievements at bolton, but the fact of the matter is he has left us for a club below us who have achieved nothing for years, he claimed to be an adopted boltonian, how the town and the club have been his home since he was 14, the man has now forgot all that and shit on the club and the town he once said were family, that is unforgiveable the man is finished in my eyes, what he did for the club I have now forgotten, his achievments mean nowt to me now.

and to answer your question if you look at the history of bwfc, both foweraker and riddings were better bwfc managers and also showed loyallty that fat sam would do well to learn from.

Foweraker and Ridding both won FA Cups and kept us in the top flight longer than Allardyce did,so both did more for BWFC than Allardyce.

And in my eyes the transformation under Rioch was more dramatic than Allardyces.

Allardyce would be the 4th greatest in my list but i could understand some people putting him above Rioch.

For achievement on limited resources, I reckon Ian Greaves must rank up there after Ridding and Foweraker. He took some useful young players and made them good top league players. 2 seasons of Frank were worth it too + good football. Pity about Len Cantello mind.

On the subject of big/small clubs, I think when we went down in 1964, we had the longest unbroken top flight tenure except for Arsenal.

For me it is not about what Fat Sam achieved at the club - the success of 4 consecutive top 8 finishes, a cup final and our first trips to Europe are not in dispute.

It is the manner in which he left the club, his need for a long break that lasted 3 days and his continued hawkish activity to unsettle players and staff at the club that has led to the 'bashers' speaking out.

No other PL club, with no money at all, has been promoted & challeneged the top 4. The man was a Bolton legend, and always will be.

You can't compare him to managers in the past, they never had to compete wth other clubs who had billionaires backing them........give it 3 years and we'll be one of the few without a major overseas backer (providing LS keeps us up).

I think he was a fantastic manager, just gutted he left us for that poisoned chalice of a job really.

Completely agree with that. Bill Ridding did a great job (as did Foweraker) but the EPL of today bears no resemblance to the top division they had back then. It has now got to be THE most competitive (not just on the park - financially, everything) in the world ever and what BSA achieved in the EPL was remarkable. Even though others won us silverware, when boots, balls and tactics were as primitive as fook, Allardyces achievements in modern top flight football make him the best ever for mine.

We'll never all agree so it's down to personal opinion.

aye

i've actually called me doc, cos i think i'm losing it, too

Correct - that pisses all over anything Sam did here, or will do at Newcastle.

glad we have moved on from the dumped boyfriend attitufde to BSA.

we are know thinking back to better shags we had in the past.

he has gone, move on.

125 year v 8 years.

During the 1920s Foweraker managed 8 top half finishes and won the FA Cup 3 times. To suggest Bolton are now so small that Allardyce's 4 top half finishes and 1 League Cup runner up in the 2000s is a better achievement is something i dont agree with.

The very fact that we have to go back to the 1920's answers its own question. Big Sam was in it for Big Sam, BWFC were in it for BWFC, all good things come to an end, business is business.

We'll have to agree to disagree then. If you don't see that football back then was nothing like the ultra competitive arena we have now then you should buy some Werthers and take up programme collecting or summat.

That is the very reason a 'small town' club like us has not been able to repeat the glories of the 20's. There are plenty of similar examples about - Preston and Portsmouth spring to mind.

Comparing managers from now and yesteryear is as futile as comparing players from different eras. We all know that todays players would p1ss all over those from decades ago due to fitness levels; tactical nous; sports science etc. Same goes for managers / coaches in my opinion.

As I said in an earlier post, it's a matter of opinion. Personally, I believe Allardyce is the best manager BWFC has had in it's entire history.

Fook the 1920's

The best 3 BWFC managers in my lifetime were imo -

1, Sam Allardyce

2,Bruce Rioch

3, Ian Greaves

I don't think it's a coincidence, that these 3 all had "big personalities" and commanded respect from players and fans alike.

Ian Greaves didn't have the respect of his players to follow rules. He wasn't a leader that laid down the law with players obeying him and fearing consequences. They did respect him in a way that he was one of the lads, liked to have a drink with them. He wasn't strict in late night outs etc. In fact you could say that some of the players took the piss.

Bruce Rioch on the other hand was a completely different character, a firm believer in discipline, even could be described as regimental at times. I mean that in a nice way and it suited some players very much. He did have the respect of his players because he was a man of high moral standards. I remember going to one of them question & answer meetings at Burnden once when Rioch was the guest speaker, he talked about the need for players to be married, stable and in bed for 11 O Clock.

There was a transfer market wth big clubs and little clubs in the 1920s.Bolton for example sold their best striker to Arsenal in 1928....he went there and won the league titles that Bolton couldnt win.

And to say "a small town " club has not been able to repeat the glories of the 20s in what you say is a more competitive arena would ignore the achievement of Martin O'Neill at Leicester who won 2 League Cups in 3 years between 1997 and 2000 on smaller crowds than Sam enjoyed at Bolton.

O'Neill's first League Cup Final win was against Middlesbrough.Sam played the same team in his final but lost.

Getting bored with this now. Start shouting like another poster and it might sink in. IT'S A MATTER OF OPINION. YOU ARE ENTITLED TO YOURS AND ME MINE.

The Leicester thing is a crock of sh1t and has no relevance to this discussion. We are talking FA Cup successes in quick succession and league titles in quick succession. Not interested in the mickey mouse cup but would have preferred, of course, that we'd won the two finals we have played in in the last 12 years.

anyone who says the gap between the haves and have nots in the premier league is not bigger than ever and growing is simply ignoring the facts.

The other week United went out and spent approx ?45m on 3 players in Anderson, Nani and Hargreaves.

I honestly think if you add up how much Boltonm have paid for players in the whole history of the club it wont be much more than that.

Chelsea sapen more a season than we have in our history.

Yes there have been rich and less rich teams in the league but like now.

Sams acheivement on a fraction of a budget of some of the others and less than teams that have finshed 10-15 points behind is incredible.

Personally my fave manager is Rioch because his teams did things with more style than Sam, he also left for a suposedly better job and look how that turned out for him. Riochs overall record is not as good as Sams though.

How many top 10 finishes did Rioch manage in the Premier League then? He wouldn't have even kept us up, had he stayed. It's all good playing 'sexy football' in the lower leagues & the old div 1, but keeping a club like us in the PL with no money is/was a f?cking miracle.

Allardyce p?sses on any Bolton manager in recent history (I say recent, as I wasn't born til the 80's).

Its all relative

BSA did keep us up 'cutting cloth' but how do you think Bruce got us up in the first place?

Not many top flight world class players wanted to play for the wanderers in division three!

Bruce went onto bigger things in a better way than BSA but if was time for BSA to move on

and... moving on should now apply to every bolton supporter!

Correct Mr George!

did you read my post ?

the bit that said 'Riochs overall record is not as good as Sams though.'

on the side of the coin where we look at how he did the job.....

Rioch also did not drag the clubs names through the mud in a bungs scandal

He did not not turn up on every other programme as a pundit

He played some great football,

3 of the all time great boltn games liverpolol in the cup , arsenal in the cup, readign at wembley

messers walker and mcginlay

he saw out his contract

i am not knocking sam he did great things at the club, but my fave manager is rioch.

sam is a legend for what he is acheived, some incredible games and great players, do not confuse the fact i prefer rioch to sam as meaning i think sam is a knob.

I think that's the point...

I mean, let's have it right; you don't always go for the bird that's the prettiest and got the best t?ts and ?rse - sometimes it's all about how likely they are to take it up the wrong'un in the car park or swallow the lot....

For me Allardyce was better on paper no question, but I enjoyed it mosy under Bruce - down to a number of factors - my age during the relative spells, the type of football, the way they conducted themselves etc etc.

To conclude, why even compare? we should count ourelves lucky that over the last 15 years we've had 2 cracking Managers - name other clubs that could say the same?

Jules

Just glad he's not a City fan
