Best Player Ever Seen

Ive nicked this topic from another forum but:

A ) Who is the best player you have ever seen in a wanderers shirt?

B ) Best individual performace from a player you have seen against a bolton team?

Mine personally would be Hierro, a sheer class player. I know he only played a handful of games, but his quality was there to be seen. When he was subbed against Everton, the reception he received going off the pitch made hairs on the back of my neck stand up.

Steve McManamen in the League Cup Final in 1995. What a performance!

Best player I've seen in a Bolton shirt is Youri Djorkaeff.

Best performance by a Bolton player is a bit trickier (Tony Caldwell's five goals against Walsall, Aiden Davison's one-man show at Tranmere in the Anglo-Italian, Simon Charlton having Henry in his pocket at home to Arsenal), but I'd plump for John McGinlay in the 2-1 win at Stoke in the 100 goals season. He was outstanding up front on his own after Nathan Blake got sent off for standing near somebody.

As for the best individual display against us, the likes of David Lee, Robbie Fowler and Bob Taylor were constant thorns in our side, but none of them could match the majesty of Bradford's Wayne Jacobs.

i know this debate has been had before in term sof the level we were at at the time.

andy walker and john mcginlay looked so much better than anything we had seen for years. but it has to be one from modern era.

Hierro only saw glimpses of how good he must have been, Youri quality, but for me it has to be jay-jay he made some of the best players ion the world look average and he seemed to love what he was doing. i really hope next year the club gets its act together and gets some of these players back to the club just to stand on the pitch again and let the fans say goodbye. for eveything fsa did the way players were discarded always left a bad taste, per, jayjay and a few others deserved more than that and so did the fans.

best against us....i think rooney for everton in a 0-0 game he looked brilliant.

Best performance against us

The way he stroked home that penalty at Boothferry Park showed the signs of a great player in the making

1. okocha

2. veron in a friendly against inter a few year back, absolulty fookin immense.

Best Bolton Player, David Lee on his day

Best performance against us, David Lee everytime he played against us for Bury!

veron in a friendly against inter a few year back, absolulty fookin immense.

Thought about that performance, actually.

Then discounted it because it was in a friendly, and if we were counting those I'd have to consider Wayne Burnett against Atherton LR.

but none of them could match the majesty of Bradford's Wayne Jacobs.

As I scrolled though the thread, I couldn't believe that the legend of Wayne Jacobs was being ignored!

Worthington always takes some beating as the best ever player to pull on the white shirt, Eidur, Okocha, Youri, Jussi, Brannagan, Walker, both Tommo's

None can match the contribution given by Nigel Jemson

best player in a Bolton Shirt for me was Hierro.

as for the performances recently by i hate to say it Rooney and Ronaldo that have ripped us into bits.

Ronaldos debut at O T in 04/05????

A lot of people seem to have forgotten how garbage Hierro was for the first half of the season, he was quite rightly transfer listed.

Exactly, he was ragging woeful. I went away to Norwich and people were giving him loads of stick. 15 good games don't make anyone a legend in my eyes.

For me it HAS to be Youri. He was a total gent, bought into the Bolton ethic, worked his bollocks off and showed us Bolton fans his unquestionable skill and ability. He lit up a season when we looked like we we're relegation fodder.

Blimey, I agree with Ian!

It's true though, for all the heroes of the past, jokey suggestions, players past their prime, great winners at lower levels etc etc, the only player in my 30 years of watching them who could really deserve the overused phrase "genius" is Jay-Jay. And I suspect he's the only one who ever will.

Best player is a tough one - Jussi, Gudni, Youri , Eidur and Jay Jay all show(ed) star quality in their respective positions for me.

I used to hate playing Bury when David Lee was playing, not as much as Barry Cowdrill did though - I remember ahead of one game with them he missed it due to shingles - rumours were that was brought on due to the nerves of facing diddy David.

Hate to say it, but Ryan Giggs is quality every time we play the filth and I'd have him down as best consistent performer versus us in recent years.

On individual performances I remember a Fulham player scoring a hat-trick at Burnden some time between 89 and 93, he celebrated with the owd smoking gun routine; he ran us ragged that day.

Then there's the game at Anfield when Fowler bagged 4 against us

That would be Andy "Andrew" Cole.

There you go again bringing facts into it

It was Gary Brazil.

I cheated and asked on Fulham's rivals site... :good:

for Bolton - Youri

against Bolton - ones that stick out, Gerrard has had more than one good game against us at the Reebok, that one Ian mentioned, Rooney when it was 0-0 against Everton, ran us ragged, remember being impressed with Ricky Otto too back in 92.

i really hope next year the club gets its act together and gets some of these players back to the club just to stand on the pitch again and let the fans say goodbye. for eveything fsa did the way players were discarded always left a bad taste, per, jayjay and a few others deserved more than that and so did the fans.

Spot on, Ani. It was disgusting the way the retained list was announced at the relevant times, denying us fans a proper send-off for these legends. Can someone take it up with the club ? Even if it can only be done one at a time because of their other commitments.
