Ive heard some shite in my time, but that greater manc nonsense off samhater takes the biscuit, i watch other teams, apart from Bolton, such as Leigh and Barrow, but any Wanderers fan would never dream of watching Citeh or Yernighid.

I can't remember the move into Gtr Manchester as I was only 3 years old in 1974. I'd be interested to hear this fruitcake's recollections of the event, especially as they were about -20.

The event happened when i was about 20, and passed peacefully, with fans swapping pennants and shirts, and saying we would watch each others clubs, now we are all part of Greater Manchester.

Are we losing our proud identity?

 

As well as all of the other reasons on this thread (which I think all are part of the reason our support is so poor at present) this one about our sense of pride is important. We are a Lancashire town. Bolton has a strong heritage. We should be proud of that. However, we seem to have been forced to become part of Manchester. The Greater Manchester change had a massive effect and whilst the majority on here are massively opposed to it, lots of young kids think its cooler to be associated with Manchester than Lancashire.

 

I hate driving out of Bolton towards Blackburn or Chorley to encounter 'Welcome to Lancashire' signs - it makes my blood boil - I was already in Lancashire.

 

There was a recent attempt to remove 'Bolton' from the road signs on the M60 and simply have one that says 'North Manchester'. Luckily this was stopped.

 

Our badge has no traces of Lancashire or even or Bolton heritage. It is an embarrassing attempt to be cool and by implictaion the suggestion from the Club's marketing men is that Bolton and Lancashire isn't cool. (Like me, if you feel strongly please write to the Club to advise this to them).

 

On a similar note, an official from Newcastle visited Barcelona to see how they had created such a strong identity and developed massive support. He was struck with the massive pride in their area, of how they considered themselves a separate nation. He went back to Newcastle and tried to develop the concept of Geordie Land. This has been reasonably successful if you look at their crowd increases over the past 10 years and also how their support has become very insular towards their own club. In the 1973 Cup Final, Brian Moore referred to the Sunderland fans as Geordies. This would not happen now. Their identity has developed and so has their support. The black and white shirt has become a symbol of Geordie Land which is shown by the fact that they sell more shirts than any other club season on season.

 

We must act. We are in Lancashire. We must fight to develop the concept and identity of a Boltonian again. In 50 years time, if this continues Bolton will be like Stockport or Salford and seen simply as part of Manchester. This cannot happen.

 

We must protect and mainatin our identity.

 

We are Bolton.

Saying that, Bolton council will jump at the chance to associate us with Manchester, sadly. As while our council have been sat on their arse & letting our already sh?te town centre fall behind everywhere else, down here they've manged to build an impressive city centre in the middle of slum-land.

Don't forget the league cup ticket debacle that lost us loads of fans. The fact that we haven't won a trophy since 58. er....bolton is was and always will be part of Lancashire. Nothing changed, except the creation of an administrative entity, which was dismantled after 12 years.

Aye, my two were brainwashed. Lad had the emblem (without the poncey ribbons) tattooed on his bicep during a visit to Bolton when he was 15. On the recent visit, my daughter and her Italo/Aussie boyfriend were offered seats in a private box to watch the scum play Roma. Young Wallaby White (the boyfriend) went along (note - supporting Roma) but the daughter turned round and said "No chance, I wouldn't go there unless th' Wanderers were playing"
