Cock Of The North?

To settle an argument, if all these teams were established Premier League clubs, which would be the biggest?

Bolton

Blackburn

Burnley

Blackpool

Wigan

Oldham

Preston

I think it would be between bolton and preston.

Us, without a doubt. Preston get a whopping 13k for big matches when they're chasing promotion to the PL.

And we're the biggest town on that list.

Not sure about Preston. Their support seems as fickle as ours. Sold out if they're doing well, half-empty if they're not. Burnley have always had reasonably good support for the size of the town. They're a much bigger club than Blackburn just down the road.

Don't forget that Preston only had a three-sided ground last season! If the average attendance was compared with the population of each town, who would be top? I suspect it would be Burnley.

I'll play along with this. If all had done what we had done over the past 10 years then I think we would be the 'biggest'. But, unlike the rest, there is an unknown potential in Blackpool.

burnley.....

Bolton,no doubt about it.

With Blackburn second.

Burnley don't have the support base to match Bolton. They've got a few thousand passionate supporters but even when they won the Championship in 59/60 they only got 26,500 against Bolton.

In the same season Bolton v Blackburn attracted 42,000 and Blackburn v Bolton attracted 39,000.

It wasn't then. They played Man Utd at Christmas and got 47,000.But only pulled in 32,000 against Blackburn in March in the run in to the title.

Can't believe we are even discussing this. It's Bolton. By a fooking mile. The others barely exist as far as I am concenred.

Accrington Stanley...

What others ?

Bolton by a mile.

Burnley have loyal fans but with a tiny town, would be limited in the growth of crowds.

The population stats you gave were for town not Metropolitan Borough (Farnworth, etc)

Bolton has around 220,000. Preston Borough is 185,000. Burnley is 88,000, most of whom are directly related

I once read somewhere that Bolton was the largest town in Western Europe.

A Bolton team doing well and playing good football would get around 26,000, PNE probably low 20,s, Burnley 19,000. Oldham would be closer to 14,000. Despite a large population, half of the town are rugby fans, and becase it is considered more Mancastrian than Lancastrian, a hugh majaority support United, but more so, City

In my opinion

Anyway, the debate is irrelevant as you left the huge Shakers off the list

Bolton borough has 265k......if you only class the actual town (140k ish) then we're still only behind Liverpool and Manchester in population round these parts.

And it's Bolton all the way....we're the biggest out of the medium-sized clubs.

Also in terms of numbers of lads each club can turn out on the big occasion Bolton are massively out in front.
