Smiley Posted September 12, 2008 Posted September 12, 2008 NOT GOOD AS THEY DID CHEAP FLIGHTS TO CANARIES....... it was ZOOM last week, this lot today. XL Leisure Group grounded 12 Sep 2008 XL Leisure Group has entered into administration ?having suffered as a result of volatile fuel prices and the economic downturn.? The group comprises XL Airways UK, Excel Aviation, Explorer House, Aspire Holidays, Freedom Flights, Freedom Flights (Aviation), The Really Great Holiday Company, Medlife Hotels, Travel City Flights and Kosmar Villa Holidays. Alastair Beveridge, Nick Cropper, Simon Appell and Stuart Mackellar have been appointed as joint administrators after XL was unable to obtain further funding. In a short statement the group said the joint administrators cannot continue trading the business and therefore all flights have been immediately cancelled and the aircraft grounded. More later.

globaldiver Posted September 12, 2008 Posted September 12, 2008 Well done to those if any lucky enough to bet them being the next airline to go bust they were 4/1 yesterday dinner!! That must be the solution. Buy a holiday then lay off the risk of the company going bust.

Sweep Posted September 12, 2008 Posted September 12, 2008 (edited) I was booked with XL to go to Cyprus for my brothers wedding in October. I've just managed to rebook with BA, but it's cost me and Mrs CWP another ?100 each. I booked via airflights.co.uk, who I obviously couldn't get through to this morning, so I'm yet to hear about my refund. I've already checked with Mastercard, and they have said I'm covered. All in all, it could have been a lot worse. A bloke I work with (and his wife and kids) is supposed to be flying to Florida with XL............he's proper buggered, as he booked direct with XL Edit: airflights.co.uk are also part of Freedom Flights Edited September 12, 2008 by CWP

If he paid by debit card he's fooked - unless he had insurance that covers airline insolvency. Although of course, this doesn't compensate for the loss of the holiday, or the extra expense of replacement flights.
no balls Posted September 12, 2008 Posted September 12, 2008 If he paid by debit card he's fooked - unless he had insurance that covers airline insolvency. /quote] Wouldn't his holiday insurance kick in then if he used a debit card from an account where that's free? Just a thought maybe.
Widnes Two Hats Posted September 12, 2008 Posted September 12, 2008 Flown with XL loads of times to Greece Now that they've gone bust Thompson and Thomas Cook will control all the flights that go the Preveza which means I shall be forced to pay silly money, the thieving f?ckers, it's already doubled over the last few years due to them buying the other companies, well they'll have to get up earlier in the morning to catch me out, I shall now fly to Corfu and get the sea plane Ha, you thought you'd gotten rid of me old bean, but you were wrong because I'm back

Boby Brno Posted September 12, 2008 Posted September 12, 2008 People are a bit worried in Crawley most of the airlines businesses going bust have head offices or major parts of their businesses in the town. Oh, well. Putting a political angle on this problem, wasn't this what Gordon Brown had in mind when he applied his 'green tax' to airline flights last year? Assuming that the tax has done bugger all to alter the affects of climate change, the only other reason was to deter people from flying. I know the airlines are not using this as an excuse but it can only have added to the burden of increased fuel costs.

Green tax is a load of bollox, very little or none of the money goes to combat so called climate change, airlines get blamed when in reality they contribute a tiny fraction of green house gasses. The tax is no more than a Stealth tax imposed by the Govt.

The tax is no more than a Stealth tax imposed by the Govt. I know it, you know it and 99% of the population know it but it dosen't stop politicians, of all parties, proposing even more green taxes in many areas. My point is that the government must accept some of the blame for this collapse and probably more to come. As an example, I have a flight booked to Prague in November and the cost breakdown is as follows; Airline flight cost 27.99 Taxes & Charges 41.51 Total cost 69.50 It is expected that more low cost airlines will follow XL into administration so it will be interesting to see the Governments reaction to the situation.
