Why the shitting hell should people pay for a train service that doesn't exist

Why the shitting hell should people pay when you can get in for free

so are you saying the Widnes Chairman lives with you?

Not normally but I live with the daughter of an ex england/widnes player, the chap sat next to me played for Widnes/Warrington/Wigan/England/GB team plus he managed the most successful Widnes team including his signings of Johathan Davies/Martin Offiah

He managed all Widnes cup runs and he's the director of rugby

Oh and he captained GB throughout the 80's

Told them they are all quentints but they reckon them football is for homos

Can you guess who he is?

Going to throw him out in a minute

Weirdo might be a bit strong but certainly I find your advice as to what to do as rather odd. My conscience is clear and will remain so until British rail give me a reasonable chance to pay.

British Rail's Customer Service telephone number is 0845 00 00 125.

I'm sure they would be more than helpful in facilitating payment from you for the journey's that you may have had when you have found it of inconvenience to make payment at the time of your travel.

Aye alright. My conscience is still clear and know you're joking now!

On a similar theme. When you visit a restaurant, get the bill and notice the bottle of wine hasn't been added

don't tell me you let them know so they can add it on?

Let me put it another way -

Have you ever been to a restaurant where they have charged you for a bottle of wine or something that you have not had?

What would you do?

I would politely point out that they had made a mistake and ask them to put it right - wouldn't you?

I couldn't keep quite then if they made a mistake in my favour, so yes I have held my hand up (on a number of times) when I've not been charged for something I've had - not just from restaurants either.

The thing is, is that yes it can and does cost you money that you could have got away with then and there but not always.

Most of the time I simply pay what I should have done in the first place and that is the end of it - but I've also had people actually let me have the goods for free for being honest about it. I've been treated like royalty in some places ever since for being honest. I've even won business on the back of it - not because my services have been cheaper or better but because they now trust me because I've shown that I am honest.

I guess some people think I'm mad for paying up rather than just walking off with a smile on my face - just the way I am though.

Sluffy...... Here's my dilemma.

I pay for a certain speed internet connection. My ISP caps my speed. I have the knowledge to steal internet from my ISP which I do. When they cap the speed I am stealing I get the speed I am paying for.

My conscience is clear as the speed I receive is the speed I pay for....... Am I correct?

Whoa there, I'm no moral guardian or anything.

All I can say is that I'm sure you are big enough to know the difference between what is right and what is wrong.

I know nothing about computers but I'm guessing you do and that you know if you are 'stealing' something or not. Up to you after that.

Look don't get me wrong, I've done stuff that at the time I thought was right but latter on through becoming better informed or things have been explained to me in a different way - found out that perhaps I had been wrong all along.

What I'm trying to say is that I'm not setting out to judge people just that given a choice I would always try to do the right thing.

Seems simple to me - treat people honestly and with respect and most (not all) will do the same to you. Treat people with contempt and dishonesty and they will dump on you sooner or later.

People aren't fools - sooner or later they will catch you out if you aren't being honest with them - they will never trust you again after that.

Just not worth it to me.

I am with NB on this one. I recently took the train from hall I'th Wood to Bolton and then Bolton to Reebok in order to attend a football game. During my journey (and the return journey) First North West or whoever had around 20 minutes to send a representative to me to claim my fare, my wife's fare, my two kids' fares and doubtless many other fares. They opted not to do so. In The World According to Sluffy, was I supposed to phone the train company to ask them to invoice me?

if that is the correct course of action then I am guilty of fare avoidance!

As I've said before - people will justify their actions to themselves.

You know that when you travel on a train you have to pay.

Ok there was no one there to collect your fare, or the train was late, or you had to stand up, or something else was not to your liking - so that was wrong.

But two wrongs do not make a right - do they?

All I'm saying is that there are ways to pay after your train journey if you have a mind too.

OK, let's put it another way:

On the train journey to the Reebok, having never passed a ticket office, I was unable to buy a ticket prior to the journey.

During the journey, however, there is a train guard/ticket inspector who alo collects fares from those in my situation. He opted to stay in his little cabin at the back of the train. I'm guessing that the train company's lack of funds from my wallet is slightly more due to their staff not doing their job than to me.

I understand what you are saying Micky.

But just because the bloke who should have collected your fare didn't - that does not mean you are allowed to travel for free - you know you are supposed to pay for train journeys.

Ok I can understand people not having the time to go hunting for them to pay but what I'm saying is that there is always a way to put things right at another time.

That is if you want too.

Used to do it at England away games, always enroute to the Reebok :pardon:

Pay on the train? pah

Im with Widders on this one!!!

P.S What a bollocks thread this is

We pay billions in tax-funded subsidies every year to private train companies who in turn make billions in profits running their government-granted monopolies. In return for our very generous donation, they give us a completely shitty service which is the laughing stock of Europe.

I think we have a moral obligation to rip them off.

We went to B&Q bought a few items including 2 boxes of gripperods which covered up the decorator steamer thingy for taking wallpaper off. The dizzy girl on the check-out with the Bar Coder missed this out which I noticed straight away but didn't say anything. I class myself as an honest good intentioned person like sluffy but couldn't bring myself to tell her that she had missed an item out.

Anyway the wife was sorting out the credit card payment with her, so I knew that she wasn't going back over the goods. We pushed the trolley outside the sliding doors almost to the car park when mrs zozzy was lookong at the receipt and realized that we hadn't been charged enough. She made me push the trolley back through the automatic doors after waiting for someone to activate them from inside, she went up to the check-out girl (who was serving someone else by then) and told her to scan the wallpaper steamer and charge us. It was about ?49. She then bollocked me when we got in the car for knowing about the mistake and not owning up. confused-smiley-008.gif

Well, I'm with you Zozzy. You wouldn't want to embarrass the girl by being critical o the shoddy way in which she goes about the job would you?

Weirdo might be a bit strong but certainly I find your advice as to what to do as rather odd. My conscience is clear and will remain so until British rail give me a reasonable chance to pay.

No....weirdo it is from me

do they not have those ticket machines on the platforms similar to the metrolinks machines, surely that's the easiest way for them to charge for tickets on local lines

Nope. Dirtrod has nothing & Horwich has a ticket office which is not open in the evening.
