Not that I'm Jesus or anything like that but I sort of feel the same way - I can totally see why people dislike Megson, the team, the tactics, the playing style, etc.....

 

BUT the problem is not him - it is the Premiership and how it is funded - ie, the massive amount of money there is for simply staying in the Premier League and the financial calamity that would happen if we did get relegated.

 

In the latest Financial figures the club published let me draw your attention to two things

 

The amount of income the club got from football - ?50.4 million

and

how much of this amount was made up from Sky money - ?32 million

 

So just short of 67% of our income comes from simply being in the Premiership and a relatively paltry 33% comes from the fans.

 

So if we got relegated we would need to TRIPLE the crowds just to match the income we have now (well ok we would have a 'parachute' payment for our first two years outside the Premiership).

 

Another massive fact to take on board is that we are ?53.5 million in debt - and that debt has to be serviced (paid off).

 

 

Unless and until people can grasp this financial fact of life then the anti-Megson discussion will go on and on and on.

 

Megson kept us up last year - his job done.

Megson looks to be keeping us up this season - job nearly done.

Megson will be there to try and keep us up next season and so on.

 

 

Whilst the Premiership money remains vital to us (and all the other clubs too) then the club will do whatever it takes to stay up - even if it means alienating a whole group of fans - because they can survive without their money - they can't survive without Sky's.

 

 

Its the Premiership funding that is directly influencing the way clubs like ours play in order to simply avoid relegation each and every season - Megson is simply doing what ANY manager in his position will do and that is avoid being relegated at all cost - sacrifice cup runs, play dire football, pick teams without attacking flair, anything - just as long as it gets us enough points to stay up!

They seem to make two sets of wings of a dove and then the finger pointing up tells us its ascending.
