Having been readily accused of being a glass half empty bloke before on here I ask the question - are we safe?

After yesterday's performance not so sure?

Can see 2 points from next 2 at best.

However I may have answered my own question by doing the trusted Predictor on BBC which would leave us 6 off bottom 3 with 3 to play if we get 2 points from next 2. Assume Newcastle win 1 of 3 & Boro will lose to Arse & Scum.

2 from next on y/days display a big ask though

I would say yes as I cant see Newcastle or boro picking up 3 wins in their last 5/6 games. We were dire yesterday but with 3 of our last 5 games at home 3 more points should not be beyond us.

Mathematically: no

Realistically: yes

Your probably right if you look at some of the fixtures teams below have left, but if Toon win today and we lose at home to Hull and Sunderland my arse will be twitching.

if we lose to Hull and Sunderland we deserve to go down...

as i have said previously...

after the fixtures that we have had this second half of the season, which perhaps has been the easiest of any of our seasons in the prem, if we go down after that...then it will be nothing short of a disiaster and will show just how poor we really are...

personally...

can't see us getting anything against Villa...

Sunderland and Hull are fighting for their lives, which means anything could happen...

i think yesterday was a perfect opportunity to secure the three points we needed, then the players could of relaxed and played without pressure...

pretty much bob-on; only thing I'd disagree with is that Villa aint what they were a few months back and we should get summat, albeit most likely 1 point, out of that game. But Hull and the mackems...

After watching the comeback against Chelsea i felt confident/hoped we could get something yesterday ( I was praying because when do they ever make it easy).

We are clearly incapable of playing our way to safety so we need to rely on others starting with Spurs beating Newcastle today. If Newc win i will be worried but that is natural i guess.

Cannot comment on yesterdays game as I havnt seen any highlights or owt as I was on a stag do, as for the question are we safe I would say yes, our home games against Hull and Sunderland will bring us at least 3 points which will confirm safety, :good:

Anyone who sat through the ninety minutes yesterday will not be taking anything for granted. No I don't think we will go down and I thought I'd be happy with that. Now however I'm not impressed at all. There was no fight at all in us yesterday. To me that proved the 'fightback' at Chelsea was more down to them than us. A feeling I've had after most results this season.

The feeling yesterdaywas that we'd set out not to concede a goal rather than setting out to score as many as we could and at least one more than Postsmouth.

It may well be the way forward against teams we, realistically, have little or no chance against. Portsmouth, in my opinion, isn't one of those teams!

We can be very poor at times (yesterday for example) but we are pretty decent defensively and are always likely to get a couple of goals. Watching Newcastle at the moment and it is very hard to see where they could get a goal from and are awful at the back, reassuring stuff.

Owd on, all the results weve got is more down to how bad th'opposition were?

I'm not saying all no. But a lot of the time yes. I know this comes down to the charge that Megson never gets the credit when we win but that's just the way it seems to me. Sunderland away, players not playing for Keane, we thrash them. Go back in the Cup under a new manager, no chance. The highest placed (i.e.best) team we have beaten at home this season is West Ham and yes I'll say it, we were bloody lucky. Eight of the current top ten have all come to the Reebok and beat us this season (with Villa still to come). You bet your life I think it's down to how bad the opposition are.

Mickey D I agree entirely. Set out for 0-0 draw and against a team below us.This must be a legitimate criticism of Megson.

And PH I don't think we are pretty decent defensively. Far from it in fact. Defensively we were awful yesterday. Could easily have been 3 or 4 conceded to our one shot on target. Our clean sheets total is one of the worst in the league.

As Snowball points out, we are anything but "decent" defensively. This season only 4 teams have conceded more than us (WBA, Newcastle, Hull & Blackburn) - we have also only managed to keep 5 clean sheets in 33 games. So I would actually suggest that we are awful defensively

We are a little bit safer as Tottingham have beaten the Cartoon Army

Newcastle must really be twitching now as they are 4 points from safety, with only 5 games to go. Their next match is at home to Portsmouth, and they really have to win that, as they are away to Liverpool the game after that

Newcastle have acrrued 0.90 points per game and Boro at 0.94 per game so statistics show both will will get about 4-5 points in the remaining 5 games therefore were safe, wish it was that easy.

Don't Boro and Newcastle have to play each other yet?

Yes

probably

but it could be too interesting should we lose the next two, which is entirely possible
