Xbox 360: Red Ring Of Death

Lad's mate has this problem: fixable or not?

If so, how easy and how much?

Loads of info out there, as Cas said. MS have extended the warranty as it is a such a huge problem. I just took mine back to Game (only 3 months old at the time) with all the gubbins and box and they gave me a new one, I swapped over my HD too so I didn't lose my saved stuff.

Tell him to get a fan to clip onto the back, makes the fucking thing even noisier but it does seem to help, mine has been fine since.

I don't think his mate has the receipt.

To cut a boring story shorter. My lad is after buying the Xbox for next to nowt and getting it fixed.

I'm assuming no receipt = no exchange.

Plus the lad might not be as keen to sell if he can get it repaired FOC.

My lad had a 360 and sold it to another mate because "it's shite, Dad, let's get a Wii instead"

We now have the afore-mentioned Wii and so he wants an Xbox.

I think it'll be easier all round if I just knock some fucking sense into him.

The feckless useless fucking Yoof of today, eh? Future captains of industry: I bet China's shitting itself.

Not 100% sure you need the receipt, think you go on the Microsoft site and put the product code or serial number in (a sticker on the bottom probably) and it tells you if you're eligible (they just extended the warranty from 1 to 3 years as I remember, so if it was bought at launch then it still might not be a FOC repair from Microsoft).

You can definitely get them repaired but no idea what the going rate is. Reliability all depends on the model and date of production really, which determines which chipset is inside. People have also claimed that the 'XBox 360 towel trick' works (google it for more info) but results are varied at best, and I think it winds up being more of a temporary fix than a permanent solution.

I don't believe that wrapping a games console in a towel is the way forward.

A pretty sorry state of affairs if it is the way forward, but I know 2 people who's previously unusable consoles started working again after trying this. It's probably just a coincedence, and I certainly wouldn't buy a console off someone hoping that I could fix it like this. Think ?60 is the going rate to repair a console independently, Microsoft charge ?70

I've told my lad this and it's up to him whether he passes the advice on.

Does he give his mate ?20 for what his mate thinks is a fucked Xbox?

Or does he tell his mate it can be fixed for nothing?

I know what I'd do. And I hope he'll do the same.

Will you lend him the 20 quid?

BTW - I have no games for the Xbox

I won't lend him the ?20.

I'm not being party to him ripping his mate off.

He's not my mate, tell him I'll give him 25.00

Yes, I'll lend him the ?20, but I'll be charging him 29.9% interest, daily

leave me out of this, I've not got the faintest foggiest notion of what anyone on this thread is banging on about. Apart from you, when you mentioned chillies :good:
