November 5, 200916 yr Lads & Lassies... following on from the poppy thread... gonna do one of these for the chaps & chappesses going through hell out there... Support our troops can we make sticky please?
November 6, 200916 yr Just to emphasise that these will be appreciated by the lads out there. I was there a ayear ago and Christmas, despite it being a part of the year when the fact you're miles from home working like a cunt is particularly stark, was a memorable time because of all the stuff that arrives through the post. Good stuff to send includes foodstuffs that can be prepared with the simple addition of boiling water, don't send Nuts or Zoo mags as they're everywhere as it is. Stick a little note in too, add the personal touch and you never know you might get a thanks letter in return. Major units out there on this current deployment are: The Household Cavalry Regiment 1st Battalion Grenadier Guards 1st Battalion The Royal Welsh 2nd Battalion The Yorkshire Regiment (Green Howards) 3rd Battalion The Rifles 1st Regiment Royal Horse Artillery 28 Engineer Regiment The Queen's Own Gurkha Logistic Regiment If you send your box to any of the above units at Op Herrick BFPO 792 It ought to get there. I think Dec 5th or thereabouts is the last date to get them away on time. Anything 2kg or below is FREE, don't let the Post Office tell you any different. Awesome, cheers folks.
November 6, 200916 yr my youngest sister has been out there for the last few months and i sent her parcels regularly , i also send a couple extra each week that she passes round to the lads n lasses, they dont half appreciate it i can tell thee
November 6, 200916 yr Maggie, I'm going to encourage my little nephews to get involved in doing this. Is it as simple as just addressing, for instance as follows: 1st Battalion Grenadier Guards Op Herrick BFPO 792 Provided it is, when it arrives with said guards, how do they decided who gets the box? - or is it all just all divided up between them (well, as much as it can be?)

Maggie, Logistically, slightly more difficult for me. Best to enlist the help of one of the fine specimens on WWays or just donate through the link? Cheers.

Maggie seeing as your our man in the know couple of questions, Is any regiment less popular? when it comes to charities I tend to support the smaller ones. Nspcc, Cancer Research etc all do well enough with out me so I go for the "unglamourous" ones. Does this apply here? You say dont send Nuts Zoo etc, what is something good to send? Something different? Something if you opended would say " fuck me I like that/makes a difference/bit of thought went into it. I dont want to send just any old thing, even though I know EVERYTHING is appreciated just something that would really help. Also my almost to be 11yo daughter wants to get involved in this so would like suggestions to be appropiate for her. Are the people sending stuff out mentioning WW in their note? Think it would be a nice touch if the lads and lasses out there knew it is a co-ordinated effort. Finally Maggie, dowter just asked can you just send a parcel aimed at the lady soldiers? She thinks they will get less as most send to the lads? Cheers pal Edited November 7, 200916 yr by Henry_VIII
November 7, 200916 yr Flipping heck, wish I'd never posted owt now!! Right, form an orderly queue: CWP - Yep, it's that simple. Perhaps if you put care off BFPO 792, as the lads and lasses are well spreadt out. BFPO 792 is Camp Bastion which is the huge shit smelling British HQ and logistical hub. I shall do my best to get some more specific addresses from ther folks I know who are there now because I think it's important that stuff is aimed to reach the people in shitty outposts rather than the relatively luxurious Bastion. It will all be spread amongst everybody. Bolty - I think you can send your one via BFPO London. Maybe that's free, I don't know. Find out what the arrangements are for Aussie forces out there. Someone will have the answer, you can't be the only Brit in Oz who's sent a parcel out to ops. Henry - No regiment is any less popular than any other, but it is the infantry who put up with the most shit. The lads at the bottom of the foodchain might be away from their Mams for the first time for fuck's sake, never mind at war for the first time and there are some dreadful locations there which are filthy and shit before you begin to consider the battling going on. These are called FOBs and PBs and there are several to choose from. So if you want to send a parcel to an anonymous soldier, I would address it something like To the men and women of (insert infantry regiment) Op Herrick C/O BFPO 792 I'll post more later but I didn't get in from an excessive drinking sesion till 7 this morn and can barely see. For now you should visit the website of an American reporter embedded with Brits, they are easily the best dispatches from the sharp end out there and brilliant photos: http://www.michaelyon-online.com/
November 8, 200916 yr How about WW 'adopting' an infantry regiment (the lads and lasses with the shitty end of the stick it seems from what Maggies says) and sending our stuff to them? Maggie, forgive my ignorance but which of the list you posted are infantry? Looking on the web I see Grenadiers Rifles Welsh Is that right?

Maggie, forgive my ignorance but which of the list you posted are infantry? Looking on the web I see Grenadiers Rifles Welsh Is that right? That sounds a plan my lobbygobbling friend. Which one are we going for? I propose one that has "one of our own/friend/family etc" or the most local. Also if we decide who is sending what then that way everything that will be appreciated will be included rather than 5 or 6 of same items being sent. Maggie when your eyes have stopped bleeding and the blood has returned to your alcohol stream could you write a list of the best things to send, Cheers mucker

I'll get onto it now I know. However, slightly fucked off that this needs to be done, these things should be provided by the govt.
November 9, 200916 yr Good informative post. I'll get onto it now I know. However, slightly fucked off that this needs to be done, these things should be provided by the govt. Better that they concentrate on equipping the poor buggers properly and let us send the little treats.
November 9, 200916 yr Better that they concentrate on equipping the poor buggers properly and let us send the little treats. It has been suggested they're not even capable of doing that.
November 9, 200916 yr It has been suggested they're not even capable of doing that. Aye, I know mate. That's why I said it. All hearsay and media dross mind. Maybe Maggie could put some meat on the bones. Are the rumours of not enough armour/equipment etc true Maggie or is it just the press bulling it up?
November 9, 200916 yr Weaponry and kit issued to individuals are both spot on for the most part. Ask yourself if you fancy going out on foot for the day with only a metal detector as defence against IEDs though. Vehicles are a different matter. It has got slightly better, but the Land Rovers they've relied on, fuck me, might as well pile on the back of a fuckin milk float. Helicopters are complete chaos. This means a lot of road moves are made in the absence of helis creating additional vulnerability to IEDs. A lot of the IT is derisory. Much of this is about buereacracy ( I defy even Carol Vorderman to spell that properly) and a rigid system mired in red tape and appalling misspending. There's a book called Lions, Donkeys and Dinosaurs which hits the nail on the head. I think there are a lot of quite fundamental improvements which are required, but that's across all spheres, not just kit and equipment. Edited November 9, 200916 yr by Maggie Tate
November 9, 200916 yr some colonel or other on the wireless last night he reckons radios are shite and a big problem for the army is that way too much of the spend has gone on teh airforce and the navy
November 9, 200916 yr Iamin. On a side note it always makes me chortle when they announce they've got Jock Stirrup in the studio.
November 9, 200916 yr Im gonna get involved and send something, I have come to realise how much these people do for us this year more than any other. Lets face it if these lads and lasses went on strike like a lot of the shithouse lazy arse workers that have done here we would all be fucked! Hats off to them all, their bravery is giving us freedom to live.
