Do you steal their possessions?

I don't think you do the sort of stuff I do if you?re in it for the money.

I'm usually dealing with the ones where their 'loving families' don't see them from one Christmas to the next - but their pensions are paid into their bank accounts!

They dread weekends because they never see anyone - most can't get out of their homes without help.

I would not treat a dog how some of these sons and daughters treat their mams or dads.

Is an extra ten or twelve years living like a cabbage better than bowing out by drinking yourself to death?

There?s some lovely old dears with wonderful families - but that certainly isn't always the case.

I think the Asians way of revering the old as a lot to be said about.

I've promised my old gits I'll not put them in a home. I hope I don't regret saying that!

At least if it's Alzheimers they'll not remember what I promised! :D

No but surely it's a bonus

Hyperthetically, if you shagged one of them, would they remember?

They'd be safer in Shipman's hands.

I think most people have a "breaking point" - and quite often it's something beyond their control that tips them over the edge, ie - the death of a loved one, loss of a job, or the break up of a relationship perhaps.I saw my own father (previously a happy and intelligent man) come within minutes of taking his own life through severe depression. It really is a terrible illness, and those who haven't seen it or experienced it first hand usually can't understand the severity of the problem, and often they don't help with all this "pull yourself together" b@llocks.

Should I end up in a home and the kids don't come to see me, then their inheritance is getting hammered on dial-a-whores, internet gambling, drugs, fags, and alcohol.

If I'm going to sit in my own shit and piss then at least I'm going to have a laugh doing it.

There's plenty on about ale and cigs on here nobodies mention food. That's a killer too if you eat shite all your life & I honestly think some foods are addictive, like a carb or sugar hit.

NB - Really trying to lose some fucking weight as part of her midlife crisis!

Very true! This time last year I was 10 stone overweight at 23 1/2 stone, smoked 20 -25 fags every day and would think nothing of supping two bottles of wine a night and 4-5 at the weekend. I knew it was all wrong but enjoyed smoking, drinking and eating shiite. Now I consider meself to be reasonably educated, but there was this defensive barrier that went up when I was tired, stressed or had cravings so any efforts to change easily broke down. I had a mental association of enjoyment with all these 3 addictions in certain situations.

I reached a tipping point just before last xmas when I was out in Manchester doing my once a year dad and daughter shopping trip which we finish with a lunch at the Little Yang sing. I parked in the Arndale and walked up to Albert square via Kendals. It was a freezing cold day but I was f?cked and sweating like a good un by the time I reached there. I felt so shit, hungover and lethargic that it spoiled the occasion. We got the restaurant early and I had to sit on a wall for the 10 mins or so before it opened as I felt too knackered to stand.

That was the crossroads for me. I muttered something to the daughter about I?d have to get fit and for the first time she gave a reply in agreement and said ?Its only willpower dad"

I started on 30th December by giving up fags, all refined carbs such as potatoes & bread, sweets, crisp, or anything that has sugar added to it. I also stopped drinking for 6 weeks to get me off to a good start. I am now 9 stone lighter enjoy going to the gym and run about 15 miles a week. I have run a half marathon and numerous 10k races with an arthritic knee which is somat I?d thought had ended 10 years ago.

I still have a stone to go but am pretty sure I will shift that by my 50th in April. I found I had to break the mental associations I had with the habits. I try not to drink Mon to Thurs (as someone else has already mentioned) but will drink the wine on Fridays and Sat. However every 3 months I go alcohol free for 4 weeks just to dry out and lose more weight.

This works for me and I came to enjoy this regime and studying and learning about nutrition and exercise. Its a bit like a rolling snowball as seeing the lbs come off, the further distances I can run, and muscle built week by week spurs me on to see how much fitter, faster I can go.

Addictions are probably different for different people, but once you break them you rediscover a lot of things you had forgotten that take their place. Life?s experiences can become very limited if all one has is work, telly, football and the pub/bottle.

:pardon: Jesus sorry for the epic.

Very good point. Think everybody needs summat in their lives as in IMO boredom/complacency can trigger depression. Read a book, join a gym, go trainspotting, anything. Just do something new rather than as you say, a cycle of work, drink, food, tv.

For me I tend to hammer the gym and eat well. As simple as cooking and getting out of the flat, making a change to my health. Rather than accepting being overweight and being out of breath from a bit of running.

I think there's a quantum leap between life's miserable fuckers who go into a downward spiral because the world is against them, and those who are medically ill.

Too many folk actually want to be depressed because it then gives them something else to moan about. They need a slap.

I've had an absolute cunt of a year, longer in fact, some days I wonder where I'm going to get money for the wages at the end of the week, but I've a 4 year old dowter who runs to the front door every time I come home and hugs me to the point of a couple of vertibrae starts to move and I just think 'fuck it'.

The problem will still be there in the morning so why should I let it ruin my evening, and 10 minutes later we're on the floor playing with Roary or Peppa. Quite often I'll go for a long walk, or a swim and spend an hour in the jacuzzi until I've cleared my head. 6 or 7 years ago I'd have been straight in the fridge for a bottle of wine and grumbled all night.

Little things can make a big difference but until you've been there you dont really understand what the danger signs are and men being men wont talk about them.

most influential post ive ever read on wways, imo. :good:

i know in my case, if im doing nowt, thats when i tend to think about stuff i don't want to think about

i guess if you're depressed (depressed, not fcuking 'fed up') though, its almost impossible to summon the energy to do owt, let alone have the inclination to do it

but what a load of shite life is when youre constantly fighting negative thoughts

After about 10 to 12 minutes on a treadmill, my body starts releasing endorphins or whatever. You don't get these watching Trishia, eating a Greggs pasty barm or spending your hard earned cash in whichever slumland pub is selling pints of chemically altered shite cheapest this week. Factamundo.

The "get an interest" is more pertinent at the top of the slippery slope rather than the bottom. If you're already there, then I guess it is a lot more difficult.

Makes early diagnosis, dropping the macho facade (if you're a man), seeking help, the key to it.

Food for thought.

Two Wolves.

One evening an old Cherokee Indian told his grandson about a battle that was going on inside himself.

He said, "My boy, the fight is between two wolves."

That certainly got the boy's attention.

"One is evil," the old man continued. "Anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority and ego."

"What of the other, grandfather?" the boy asked.

"The other is good," he said. "Joy, Peace, Love, Hope, Serenity, Humility, Kindness, Benevolence, Empathy, Generosity, Truth, Compassion and Faith."

The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather, "Do we all have such wolves fighting inside us, grandfather?"

"Yes," the wise old man said.

"Then, which wolf wins the fight?"

The old Cherokee simply replied, "The one you feed."
