There are fans who genuinely can't go to the Stadium because smoking areas are not provided. It is a basic need for these fans who have as much right to come and support the team as anyone else. It is a habit.

And before anyone brings up the arguement of other addictions, smokers have become this way 'legally' with the backing of government law.

Your second point could be contested in the High Courts which may find that this British law is in fact itself Illegal

if they can't last 2 hours without a cigarete then i suggest they have more serious issues than being unable to go to the football.

TBH if theres a smoking area and its well ventilated, i have no issue with people smoking at the ground.. As long as people stick to it..

in order to comply with the law you'd need some sort of pen outside the stadium but where only ticket holders can access.

Why because some addict can't last 2 hours without a fix they 'need' BWFC to provide them with somewhere to get their nicotine hit?

Even as a smoker I agree that non attendance due to not being able to smoke is a lame excuse.

However, other grounds that I have visited have organised a cordoned off area outside of the stadium at half time that people could smoke in. Cant see why it would be a problem for us to adopt this.

It is do-able but i see no reason why BWFC should have to provide it.

Customer service?

I see no reason why BWFC should have to provide beer and pies but they do.

they make money off the beer and pies.

well de'veres do who pay the club a fee to provide these products.

I have no objection to people being smokers, free choice and all that, but they shouldn't expect people to provide them with the facilities to feed their addiction

the club would need to construct at least 3 pens in order to provide these facilities, one for away fans and then, as a minimum, two in opposite corners to be shared between adjacent stands barriered off down the middle to prevent people moving between stands.

But would it not seem daft for the club to be so active in supporting the quit smoking campaign only to spend money providing facilities for people to smoke

not to mention the daft amounts of grief they would get..

No

It is the fact that we all have serious issues away from the football, and you being patronising.

Also you are making out that not being at the match is a trivial thing. Ask the lads that are banned if this is 'something and nothing'. Ask bolty if not being able to go to the matches is unimportant.

I will be attending all the matches whether there is a smoking section or not.

And you my friend are making me late.

bye for today

Moveable barriers, 1 steward on each for 15 mins, hardly going to break the bank is it?

Or use a hand stamping system as used in the fanzone?

No

yes because being in australia is exactly the same situation as being unable to smoke for 2 hours

even constructing permanent facilities wouldn't break the bank of BWFC it's more the message that providing these facilities would send out after all the backing the club gives the Quit smoking lot.

Maybe in your view, pubs shouldn't provide outside smoking areas in the way they have done.

I don't know you pal, but you come across as an ignorant and patronising twat

I think it would be very easy to make the East Stand a smoking area, you could open up the roof tereace above fanzone for the upper and have 2 fenced off areas outside the east lower where the exits are (obviously they would fold away before and after the game). Wouldnt cost much at all but would just show that we are a club that caters for all fans, the leisure industry is all about detail and this is a prime example.

WBA and Derby are amongst a number of clubs that cater for this even for the away support.

Not a big one just that little extra detail.

should the club also provide an area for those of us who fancy a wank when the game has gone a little dull?

I for one struggle to last 2 hours without one.

ot a bad shout, they could get those porn booths that they have in Munich. Bring it up at the fans forum along with change of badge and smoking area.

They do provide an area for your requirements - follow the signs for male toilets. I don't think they provide porn mags though.

They can do if they want but they shouldn't 'have to'

Smoking took 2 of my grandparents and as you said there's plenty of people out there who'd love to come to the football but can't (such as my brothers freind who is hospital with a smashed jaw thanls to some scrote taking a random dislike to him) so sorry for not agreeing that people who won't come as they can't have a cigarette are being hard done to.

If that makes me ignorant and patronising then so be it

Smoking, along with excessive alchohol consumption, a high fat diet, lack of excercise, drug abuse etc, etc, all lead to premature death. Each individual has a personal choice to make. I fed up of people/governments telling me how to live my life.

Education not legislation!

For what it's worth, I won't be in the fan zone today, I will be following the action in a bar in Prague where I will have the odd cigar with my beer without the smoking Stasi police bothering me! (they got rid of the Stasi 20 years ago)

SVOBODA! (Freedom!)

It is illegal to smoke in the concourse areas under the stands- that much is true. Whether the stands themselves are covered by the definition "enclosed public place" or not is less clear. The FA and the Football League have mde it a directive that smoking is not allowed in any part of any stadium in the Prem or Football League. Even on open terraces in League Two it is enough to get you ejected and possibly a banning order.

The FA and Police have got another thing wrong, too. Why is it perfectly ok to drink in the concourse, but an arrestable offence to drink in the seated areas? Surely most people drink more sensibly if they aren't rushed. Buy a pint, take it into the stand and it will last most people the whjole half. Instead, people have a couple of pints before the game and then get a couple more at half time and have to down them. People are not discouraged from drinking when they are given time limits- they see it as a challenge!

you cannot drink in view of a football pitch on a match day.

hense why the corporate boxes have curtains they pull across the windows.

why you can have a beer at the cricket and rugby i'm not sure

You can have a drink the boxes looking at the pitch until 15 mins before the game and after the game so legally you should be able to do the same in the regular seats.

Also if you leave the lounges to go for a smoke they will not let you back in but if you go to "get something from the car" then there is no problem.

I know the lagalities regarding views of the pitch, etc., but my point is that the FA and Police were consulted in the making of this law and they got it badly wrong. If there was ever a problem with alcohol and football, it wasn't that you were able to see the match whilst drinking. It is all the alcohol consumed before the game and topped up at half time that was the problem! I just don't understand their logic.

As for why it's allowed at cricket and rugby- the perceived wisdom is that there is a connection between hooliganism and alcohol in football, but there is no such thing as cricket or rugby hooliganism. For a start, there is crowd trouble in both those sports. And secondly, there are many members of various "firms" who drink less than Owen Coyle! Laws based purely on unsubstantiated myths.

As for smoking, the only non-smoker known to have ever died of passive-smoking related lung cancer was Roy Castle. And the fact that he played the trumpet which funnelled all the smoke into his mouth is rarely mentioned by those who see it as conclusive proof that passive smoking kills. I am not saying it doesn't, but I'm sure that living in a large town often choking on car exhaust fumes is a far more potent threat to health- and there is no sign of anyone ever banning the car!

The fact is, Government consistently interferes where the enjoyment of ordinary people are concerned. They marginalise football fans, but because the law makers tend to prefer cricket and rugby, they interfere less with these sports. Whilst Goprdon Brown was chancellor, he put up duty on popular drinks like beer- but exempted whisky. Now I wonder why that was........? Nothing to do with being Scottish and liking a "wee dram", by any chance? We will always face an uphill struggle with those who hold power. I just wonder how many people have actually stopped going to games as a direct result of the smoking ban. Unfortunately, there is no way that will be overturned, and as even outside areas are classed as a workplace, I doubt whether smoking pens would actually be lawful anyway.

PS: Sorry for the elongated political rant!
