Played rugby (union) for the school, we had a cracking team. Played at Ruffwood in Kirkby and I think we scared the shit out of them despite their name. Maybe we were not rights.

Also played at Ducie High School in Manchester and a few in Widnes and Warrington which were fun!

Christ you lot make Dotheboys Hall look tame. Smithills was fine but then went to Turton Sixth Form as North College seemed like a dump! Plus they didn't do theatre studies

Before it became Withins Comprehensive or whatever the fook it's called now, Breightmet Skoo was there.

 

Bolton County Grammar School moved up there, right next door, in 1966 with caps, uniforms, ties etc. In the period of 'adjustment', running the gauntlet up Newby Road was fun and games, I can tell thee. Being brighter, BCGS boys were either utter geeks or cool fcukers from round town of the Moddish variety. B'met were all sideburns, leather jackets with studs or absolute scutters who had nits and no pot to p?ss in.

 

Wasn't long before the inevitable showdown occurred after all sorts of fun and games rock chucking at lunch times; ties cut on Newby with flick knives etc. Two cocks o't schools faced off in the amphitheatre in the scarp at the back (looking out over St. Annes). BCGS brained Breightmet and the boot was on the other foot after that. They stopped challenging us on Newby Road and even the 'snobs' jibes dried up. In 5th and 6th years, a few of em started turning up at the Palais soul nights, got scooters and became part of the in crowd.

 

Didn't stop run ins with the bead rattlers from down the hill from time to time though. What's it been like since it became Withins High then?

Tonge was then knocked down and we all moved back to the Newby Road site.

 

The Sixth Form then moved to Smithills School, as did all the North Bolton schools, except Turton and Canonslade.

 

South Bolton Sixth Forms all went to Hayward, but as from this year, it's all merged into one in the Town Centre, overshadowing MickeyD, along with the old Manny Rd College.

I attended a meeting at St Catherines recently and it was almost the same as I rememered it in 1980, felt quite emotional.

I moved up to Newby Road halfway through my first year when it was brand spanking new. Don't know if you remember Paddy Roberts but he didn't exactly appreciate me being the first skinhead in the school and travelling there on a Lambretta. He was glad when I left

Just so you get a picture of what it's like these days P, once you cross over the railway at Moor Lane you have the Fire Station opposite Mecca bingo and the Casino, then on the same side of the road as the Fire Stn, the Bolton 6th form and then Bolton Community College which was Manny Road Tech.

 

As has been stated it all dwarfs the station.

There were a few he championed around the place as 'paragons of virtue' and it cut him to the quick to have to expel one lad when he caught him nuts deep in a Daubhill blonde at lunchtime in the history room (which was next door to his office). I went to Rivington & Blackrod & to be honest it was quite boring now i've read some of these stories. I don't remember much happening, but I was a bit of a swot to be fair.

 

Oh, I recall everyone getting called into to the big hall once as the Dirtroders had all kaled to the back of the bus as it went up Tanners and the front wheels came of the ground. I don't even remember there being a "cock of the skoo". Dull.

 

Traffic Ed watching whilst sat in Maths was excellent though. A load of not rights going putt putt putt on a moped sort of thing on the tennis courts. Now that was a CSE everyone wanted!
