Early in the second half our newest signing Robbie Savage smashed home a long range free-kick - but that was the end of the scoring and a 270 mile journey home awaited. Away fans were banned by Torquay in 87/8 (for reasons I can't now remember). However a small number of BWFC fans are clearly audible after Savage's screamer. 

Someone at Torquay clearly didn't llike outsiders... an away fan ban and the BWFC camera crew positioned behind a post in the main stand!

A tough away trip and game , so perhaps no real surprise at the final score , proper old school ground.

Looking through that season's results I see Torquay did the double over us , strange to think a season later at Wembley we went into that game strong favourites and won fairly comfortably in the end.

I think the Torquay home game is the last one before the pause in games being filmed before Roadrunner took over. Torquay's winner came late and it was a screamer with Dave Felgate being blamed by some. It would have been a more comfortable ride in May without that double of theirs.

Yep. They always did that in early January. Lever End more heavily populated than usual with people making a once a year visit.
On that particular video Dave is waxing lyrical about the brass band that are present and the other special events arranged for the day.

Wolves fans causing trouble in Torquay caused the away fan ban, from memory anyway. Wolves were banned from a few grounds that season

Makes sense. 

They were banned from Bolton. I think a few got in the Burnden Stand (a couple of weeks after our game at Plainmoor)

I remember that - Gerry Nardiello I think who hit it. No keeper would have got near it

A majority of the defeats were by single goal margins ( other than Scarborough/Wolves /Colchester) , which suggests we were perhaps a signing or 2 off finishing the season a lot more comfortably than we did . I only just realised that Scunthorpe and not Torquay would have got promoted if we hadn't have won at Wrexham.

Maybe we lacked another prolific scorer alongside JT. He was miles ahead of folk like Steve Elliott and Trevor Morgan in the scoring charts. We did make some signings during the season itself. From memory: Peter Barnes, Stuart Storer, Robbie Savage and then Andy May on loan. 

Andy May was the best signing during the season itself, pretty sure he scored the winner at Orient.

Right, a teaser......without looking, who was the last player to score against us in that 4th division season.

I'm not looking - but it would have been a Cambridge United player in the 2-2 draw in the third last game. We kept clean sheets in the last two matches. 

May did score one of the goals at Orient, not sure if it was the winner. He also scored the first in the game straight afterwards at home to Burnley. Both games a goal down and came back to win 2-1.

I was at that. About 25 Bolton fans met in the nearest pub & either one of ours down there or friendly locals sorted us all out for membership cards  ( i think ) & we all got in. As far as i know. everyone who went got in, on the extended highlights on local news, Dave Jackson & co were very obvious in a space on the terrace. !!!!!!!

Well you can certainly be heard after Savage's goal! That's a decent little claim to fame. Even better than being one of the 2,902 on against Darlington on Bonfire Night in 1985. I know everybody says that but I really am one of those. It's the truth!!

My memory of that game was that I'd written us off before the start! They were just a better side than us that season.

Bolton were brilliant that day. Then if memory serves on the following Friday we went to Wigan and lost 2-0 in one of the many grim nights there around that era. Went from being convinced about our prospects to thinking we were absolute shit in the space of six days.

Typical us mate , didn't we only stay in the play offs by the skin of our teeth ? . I remember going up for the first leg with my mates Dad and his brothers ( all Notts Fans) , and on the way home they were virtually ready for booking their Wembley tickets , I remember we started well , but faded badly and did well to hold onto a draw. The second leg I was still confident(ish) , and then Tommy Johnson scored after about a minute . Second half we came at them and Philliskirk had a flick header that Steve Cherry somehow kept out , we carried on at them , but Bartlett got sent through the middle ( He was rapid) , and scored a screamer if I remember. I still remember my mates dad giving his lads a bollocking on the way home for keep ripping me .

Think we had to beat already relegated Chester on the final day to stay in the play off places. Beat them 1-0

THey had a real quality central defender called Dean Yates too. Just a better side. We weren't ready for the second tier. I reckon if we'd gone up with that team, or even the year after, we'd have struggled like hell to survive.

Anyway Notts had a bad day yesterday! Although I wanted them to win it.

THat was the season after in 90/91. This is 89/90. I can remember this stuff. Ask me about fixtures from the last four or five years and I'm clueless.
