You Tube Bolton Stuff

Back to the October of our Division 4 season. The point at Rochdale had maintained a mini unbeaten run and another home fixture beckoned. Swansea were to eventually be promoted via the play offs but rarely featured in terms of contention for the automatic slots. However their team featured a central defence of future Prem player Chris Coleman and Alan Knill. A stubborn combination if ever there was - and so it proved.

Bolton had played Swansea on a few occasions in the eighties and not won home or away. They were becoming a bit of a jinx team. Another pretty poor first half display on a drizzly Autumn Saturday saw us 0-1 down at half time. The second half took on the familiar theme of a home side chasing the game in an increasingly desperate way with the canny away side wasting time and looking a threat on the break.

Dave Higson's ire was split between the team and the referee as the match wore on ... and on. Chances came, chances went. Then in the very last minute of normal time a free kick was won on the edge of the box and Steve Thompson  curled a beautiful shot in to the Lever End goal.

Relief was everywhere at Burnden ... but it was only a point. Won 7 Drawn 4 Lost 4 was no disaster - but not quite the form to indicate we were going to storm Division Four. Still ... four games unbeaten...

Cheers Paul , interesting free kick set up at the end , with the 2 players in front of Tommo , I can imagine Dave getting home and kicking the Cat  how cross he seemed . With Elliott and Morgan you can see why we had such a heavy reliance on J.T's goals , neither seemed blessed with a deal of finishing ability , although I always had a soft spot for Big Trev.

Yep. Big Trev was a target man. Eliott had been more prolific earlier in his career. I think we got him on the decline. Funnily enough though he does score the winner in the next game at Newport the following Tuesday night. Against Swansea him, JT and Trev were all on at the end. Kitchen sink.

Yep. That's mine. From a BBC dvd about the old Lancashire clubs. I've posted all the BWFC stuff but on the original you have to fast forward through loads of Blackpool, Blackburn, Burnley and PNE shit.

On a few games Elliott scored some good goals , but more often than not he was always ' going close' , yep  , I liked Big Trev and had more understanding of the all round contribution he gave us , with him being the big target man .

I was at that Newport game

I think it remains the lowest league attendance for any BWFC game

Big Trev also did a reasonable job the season after in Div 3. Probably could have been fitter but he was a third tier standard player.

I will post our winner from that soon, tomorrow if I can. Season before at Newport was a 2-1 defeat in pissing rain and a nail in our coffin. We play them for the first time in 32 years late next month!

Did Newport finish this season ? , or go under before the end of it.

From memory they finished it with kids. We beat them 6-0 at Burnden very late season.

Aye we did. Burnden Paddock was singing "we love you Newport, we do" as it was clear they were fielding a low strength side and struggling. Seem to remember they had a decent centre midfielder with long hair who really gave his all in spite of the circumstances.

Back to Div 4 in 1987/88. November had been reached and with the season almost one-third over Bolton had won 7 drawn 4 and lost 4. It was more play off form than automatic promotion stuff but after years of drab relegation battles it was a change. Next up was Newport County away. One thing that hadn't changed was our dismal 1980s away form. We'd so far only managed one win - at Hereford. The second away win came in this Tuesday night fixture at Somerton Park courtesy of a Steve Elliott piledriver. Newport were to finish a distant bottom of Division 4 in huge financial difficulties. At this relatively early stage of the season they were still a functioning football club.

This was now five games unbeaten for Bolton and a big fixture at home to Leyton Orient was next up. At the time the O's were near the top of the league. That'll be the next installment.
