Proper nonsense indeed. And lots of it.

Don't worry yourself Bex, they'll be picking on somebody else next week.

This isn't a pop at anyone, just an observation, I've been in and around PC suites in University libraries, schools, offices etc. for nigh on 15 years - I've yet to see one person rolling on the floor laughing their 'ass' off. I saw an academic on telly recently, he was claiming txt speak, neo-Americanisms and the Australian questioning intonal will be accepted as the norm in 20 years. This got me thinking, maybe Pol Pot was right after all? I've got a mate who's the wrong side of 30, like me, yet he insists on emailing/texting using this whippersnapper method - I never pull him up about it though, I just piss on his toothbrush everytime I'm at his house.

What's the difference between summat like LMAO and HBAYT, without stating the obvious.

HBAYT is to deceive the unknown

LMAO is for when your 13 on msn trying to get your first bit of action

Well you got the LMAO wrong but my point is, both are abbreviations, would Bexy get away with spelling it out as Laugh out loud, laugh my arse off, etc?

After all these abbreviations are emotions, a SMILEY is an emotion image, L.OL, LMAO etc are just the same, but in text, not image.

I don't like that text talk either.

I'm not trying to win this one, and I'm not really trying to take sides or stick up for Bexy.

What I'm trying to understand is difference.

I'll use No Balls as an example, no disrespect to her at all, I've seen her time and again add the ::lol:: and :D smiley, now the  smiley is broken on here a little, sometimes it comes up as an image, sometimes as text.

No Balls obviously doesn't like to see things like L.OL, LMAO, ROFL etc but she still uses the Smileys that are made because of these words, a smiley is an image of the text, just like a painting of a DOG is an image of the word DOG[for example]

Are we saying smileys are allowed, but the TEXT they are made from are not? without the text, you have no smiley, both are emotions, both are ways of showing how you feel through typing, you can't show facial expressions[unless you have a webcam] so these smileys/abbreviations etc are ways of showing a positive or negative response.

Bexy has had tons of members constantly asking her about her body, she has handled all this very well, and to me her using these words like L,OL, LMAO are showing a positive reaction to the question, a bit like in real life when you laugh at stuff, maybe it's a laughing it off kind of emotion, you know like not really interested in replying with specific details of her self, but to show she's got a sense of humour and doesn't want to come across as a bit of a snob, a bit annoyed, she uses these emotions as a way to not react negatively, however coun tering this, she then gets people disliking her way of showing emotion, and I bet it can feel like she can't win.

Of course the use of L,OL,LMAO etc could be stopped, but then what about the smileys, the emotion image? it's just the same, but in a different presentation.

I'm not expecting a positive response to this post here, but I'm just trying to put across my thoughts, of course it would be nice to have a friendly etiquette, a place where people don't pick up on typo's/Grammar etc, but there are ways people react in real life, and there are ways people react on the Web, does it show asertive character, or does it show a not willing to listen character.

As you have mentioned me, I will respond accordingly.

I see no correlation between a smiley & L OL, ROFL etc. A smiley is to intimate how something is to be taken, as in a joke :D or as in I'm being grumpy  .

As for L OL, etc. As another poster has stated, I have yet to see anyone roll over whilst laughing, not lose their head or arse. Those acronyms are just bloody stupid.

With reference to Americanisms, we have a perfectly good language of our own so I see no reason why it needs diluting with ridiculous & to be frank, nonesensical, sayings. Maybe I'm just old fashioned, or maybe I just like the language as it is at the moment.

I hope that clears up any misunderstanding.

Thank you.
