5 years ago today we signed Anelka for 8 million. doubt if I'll ever see that much spent on one player again. Back then we had an idea of where the club was going.

Bankrupt?

If the board gave OC that much he would be off to the lower leagues like a shot to see if there are around 30 players of the quality of NRC and Eagles we could sign using his tried and trusted "cross my fingers hope one comes off" method.

most probably the biggest plantpot we have ever had on wanderersways

and that takes some doing

I've always thought you just liked a bit fishing on here, but I was wrong, you really are a bellend aren't you. We are in millions of debt and set to make a loss in the next year, what else do you expect? Fuck off down the road to Old Trafford if you don't like it.

Seems to have forgotten that we have signed a player for more than that since then....as said by others, hughmungus is a plantpot

Anelkas fee came straight out of Eddies pocket because he must have felt confident that the club was going forward, doubt if he lost much money when he was sold.

Can you honestly see him doing that again when they present him with plans to buy the players OC now attracts !

Or possibly the market has changed so dramatically since then it's nigh on impossible to do that again.

Anelka's position was unique in that he was perceived as sulky dick head and Bolton offered a stepping stone back to the top of the Premiership.

And it was seen as an investment

We were always going to make money on him

So, we could have a scout specialising in giving talented petulant miserable fuckers with a track record of causing shit a chance to shine again? It's a nich? market, and I reckon Hugh could apply for that position. Barton maybe?

FTR, I've met him on a few occasions and he's proper nice though to be fair

(Anelka, not Hugh)

I fear you are right, it just saddens me a bit that we could once pull off these signings. Anyway the "plantpot" has a ticket for Anfield in the Bolton end !, on Saturday so I can see first hand what all the fuss is about.

Look at the sort of attacking players that are going for big money in this transfer market. Connor Wickham to Sunderland for 13m, Jordan Henderson 16m and Stewart Downing 20m, basically you can get fuck all for your money these days. Which leaves Owen Coyle trying to be a bit more shrewd than other managers in the market, because he understands that we can't just piss money away in the position we are in.

I presume you mean Anelkas prolific replacement Elmander, just remind me did we get any money for him when we sold him on like Anelka ?

This may shock you but I agree with your point but at what stage does "shrewd" become "desperate" ?

Oi twathook, at least try and get your story something like.

Eddie Davies paid for Anelka "out of his own pocket" so to speak because it was widely agreed that Anelka's stay would be short term. A few seasons, at most. At his age he would still provide a very healthy return on the original outlay.

During the initial talks with Anelka, it was put to him that a move to Bolton would provide him with a great opportunity to put himself back in the limelight for a bigger move in a few seasons time.

They are totally different. Shrewd is getting a player in like NRC, who ran the game against us last year, on a free. Desperate is paying ?35m for Andy Carroll.

Sorry double post

There was a lot of good pickings out there on frees......NRC, upson, woodgate, trezeget.

In todays Market and for the smaller clubs these are great signings because no fees are involved.

Another thing with all these top clubs signing brand new teams; there are some cracking players available on the cheap, Inc our target SWP. Only problem is they want big wages.

When you look at our past we have taken some massive earners on frees.....youri, okocha, hierro et al.

Glad you agree with me then, so why cant we do it again?

When he starts paying ?8m to appease whingebags off the internet.

Perhaps, stick with me on this as I fear it may be a bit confusing for you, that sort of player isn't out there at the moment.

Yes and Coyle probably knew these players were on a free, amongst others. But he would be looking at that list thinking we can't afford to pay big wages for a player who isn't that good, in Upson, paying big wages to a lad who could spend more time on the physio table than playing, and big wages on a 34 year old who is doing ok in a relegated Spanish team.

If the cap fits.....

Hate to break up a schoolyard contretemps but, when you've all stopped scrapping, does anyone know if we're likely to sign any more players before 1st Sept ?
