How Much Have We Improved

Featured Replies

Our team in the 95 League Cup final against Liverpool was :-

Brannagan, Green, Phillips, McAteer, Seagraves, Stubbs, Lee, Sneekes, Paatelainen, McGinlay, Thompson

Against Liverpool this weekend was:-

Jaaskelainen, Steinsson, Knight, Cahill, Robinson, Eagles, Muamba, Reo-Coker, Petrov, K Davies, Klasnic

So, have we got any better??

Whats the strongest team if picking from them all?

I'll play, from those 2 teams I would go

Jaaskelainen, McAteer, Stubbs, Cahill, Robinson, Lee, Thompson, Muamba, Reo-Coker, McGinlay, Klasnic

None of the 95 team would get in current team.

Didn't realise Seagraves played in that game.

3 of them would walk into our team McAteer, Stubs and Thompson.

Exactly the 3 i was going to say

they are the only 3 that come close, not entirely convinced about thomo though...

Brannagan ?

I know Jussi is good but then again so was Brannagan at his best

Will give you Stubbs but that's it

Super John still in his pomp in 95, scored 20+ goals. Sorry but he knocks today's SKD into a cocked hat!

You said none at first so your opinion means nothing now :D

Love john mcginlay, but never cracked it in the top level did he?

Looking at the 95 team he start two left wingers. Dont remember that but there you go. I'd have an out of position David Lee over Eagles anyway.

I'd go Brannagan, Steinsson, Robinson, Stubbs, Cahill, Lee, Reo-Coker, McAteer, Thompson, McGinlay, Klasnic.

6-5 to the old lot.

Eh?

Eh?

Thompson and Lee

david lee was VERY right sided.

Are we sure, I remember him as a left winger and so does this Liverpool rightback

I can show you a picture of John McGinlay in goal, too.

That David Lee cross is one of the greatest of all time, especially on his wrong foot.

Fair enough.

In that case he gets in miles ahead of Eagles :D

Admittedly I was only young in 95 and didn't know enough to form an opinion; most of my knowledge on our team back then relies on television footage.

Well aware that McAteer and Stubbs went on to have successful top flight careers, and Thommo in Scotland, but nostalgia aside I firmly believe that they are the limit, and the only players that could possibly make our side now.

Let's not forget that we went on to be relegated twice in the three seasons with many of the same players, and football has changed an awful lot since then. The standard and fitness levels have also improved since those days.

Good thread. Just as well we're not comparing the Franck Passi/Ian Marshall-era of BWFC!

Strange how many similarities there are in the two teams:

The long-serving experienced keeper:

Brannagan/Jaaskelainen

The left back who gets stick for not being good enough:

Phillips/Robinson

The centre back destined for 'better':

Stubbs/Cahill

The slghtly more slumsy centre back:

Seagraves/Knight

The battering ram:

Paatelainen/K Davies

Goal poacher:

Klasnic/McGinlay

The skilful, but lacking pace left-winger:

Thompson/Petrov

A winger called Lee:

David / Chung Yong

The slightly weak link right back:

Green/Steinsson

Which leaves McAteer and Sneekes as Muamba and Reo-Coker. Can't find any comparison there!

In fairness, Scott Green didn't play right back often. He was more of a Tamir Cohen.

Not sure I agree with Petrov not having pace. I think he's pretty quick. Thompson, on the other hand, was one of the slowest wide men I've ever seen in my life. Fantastic left peg though. If he had anything like Petrov's pace though, he'd never have played for us in the the first place.

petrov was fuckin quick in his day, still no slouch now tbf.

There weren't many positions "Greenie" didn't play were there? I remember him playing on either wing and also up front. I also remember him having the scariest front teeth ever.
