Renting V Buying

whats the verdict on it, in an apartment at the mo but can't stand the noise of people stomping about upstairs or people setting washers off at midnight and having the whole place shudder so am now on the hunt for a house, thing is though the price of renting houses is madness so is it wiser to buy?

Imagine you don't know Bolton & just bought it on spec! :D

Anyhow, I'm glad I dont have to worry about such things, it all seems like hard work.

That cottage/house is in a nice little area. My mates used to rent it.

60k is only 50% of it.

I agree. A heavy session on the ale and then trying to come down them whilst wearing socks has got, "...Found dead at the bottom of stairs" written all over it.

Dunno, you'll ve paid 180k and got nothing show for it in 25 years if you pay say 600 a month in rent. 100k mortgage in 25 years you'll pay a similar amount back but be left with something work a few bob thats yours.

Not really, depends what type of mortgage you take out and at what rate. On a repayment, the vast portion of what you pay initially is interest, I was pointing out that rent may be "dead money" but so is paying interest. Also buying will wipe out your savings as the deposits required at the moment are huge, so you need to factor in the lost interest. There's no simple answer.

If you've rented for the last couple of years, property prices have dropped, you would have lost that "dead money" anyway if you'd have bought. Conversely, if you choose to rent and propery prices rocket then you've fucked yourself over bigstyle. If you want to move, estate agent fees, solicitors plus mortgage "arrangement" fees are that high many people would be better off renting their first property.

My mortgage will be paid for in 4 or so years thanks to Barclays and their fucking ridiculously generous mortgage and money made when their share prices was going up and down like a prossie's knickers.

OMG, as they say. :o

the cottage is 120k, 60k appears to be shared equity

the apartment though, space wise, looks a bargain

aye, didnt spot the 50%

that apartment is easily over 100k round our way

Which 50% do you get though? Upstairs or downstairs?

I rented for a couple of years, 1st flat paying ?545 a month. Then moved to the valley ?500 a month

Bought a repossession in heaton last year for 100k, paying ?510 a month repayment mortgage. Same bills just have to my own DIY if anything breaks.

Renting suited me at the time. testing the water, make sure can pay bills, put up with the mrs ect.

Identical house next door but one has just gone on the market for 160k :)

Defiantly buy if you can.

Always go for the downstairs so you can refuse the owners of the other 50% access. They'll soon get bored then you can be sneaky and live in both halves without the other party knowing.

king size memory foam...

people do have these daft ideas..

I'm beginning to wonder if I should jot the daft ideas I come across, had a customer last week that I picked up a triple wardrobe for, she neglected to tell me she lived in a block of flats... it looks nice at the bottom of her stairwell...

I'm all for renting. I've lived here for 2 months, and i'm on a 12 month contract, I'm not sure if to stay after that as the house is so small and there isn't a garage. The missus loves it, but if we had bought we wouldn't have that flexibility.

And did you offer to christen the mattress for her?
