November 17, 201114 yr http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-15752918 Britain's 'cheapest' lunchtime meal was unveiled by scientists on Wednesday - the toast sandwich. The Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) is reviving the mid-Victorian dish, which, unsurprisingly, consists of two slices of bread around a slice of toast. The society is so confident in the repast, it will offer ?200 to anyone who can create a cheaper alternative. what kind of butty is that? think i'll pass thanks
November 17, 201114 yr Had a variant on Cordoama beach recommended by the surfer's last summer. Makes a greasy breakfast bap seem healthy
November 17, 201114 yr That would be a black pudding in a bread roll, rather than the bread pudding muffin you get on a google? Sounds reasonable. Nope - a chippy steak and kidney pudding on a bread roll. Jesus, I'm salivating as I type.

November 17, 201114 yr I still have an HP butty on the odd occasion. I still love them, made with Warbies Milk Roll as a triple decker. Decadent! Worthy10 Posted Today, 06:39 PMI used to have ketchup or hp butties as a kid! As a kid it was Heinz Salad Cream butties for me, Piccalilli was another or perhaps poor man's Hotdog - Ketchup and Mustard on an (untoasted) slice of Warbies Toastie Loaf (we were poor, but we were, well, pissed off with being poor frankly). Who are these mysterious Scientists? With these harebrained, worthless experiments - who they always wheel out on a slow news day? November 18, 201114 yr I still have an HP butty on the odd occasion. I still love them, made with Warbies Milk Roll as a triple decker. Decadent! surely there isn't enough texture in that, you would have to stick a couple of ready salted crisps in it for me.
November 18, 201114 yr surely there isn't enough texture in that, you would have to stick a couple of ready salted crisps in it for me. Oh, I'd not thought of that. I may try that addition. But no, because it's a triple decker, I find it makes it substantial enough.
November 18, 201114 yr slice of Bread, loads of ham, butter the ham, another slice of bread, loads of ham, butter the ham, etc until 6x super decker, then microwave for 40 seconds, butter them again, then in for 20 seconds. Then pepper it, or use peppered ham, or use a toastie and stack them up and use a bacon wrap to keep them in place.

November 18, 201114 yr heinz, warbies? you cant have been that fookin poor youri. I don't remember there being cheap brands when I was a kid though. You either bought branded or made your own.

November 18, 201114 yr I don't remember there being cheap brands when I was a kid though. I don't remember them either. Surely they existed. Was Sunblest a cheap brand?
November 18, 201114 yr I don't remember them either. Surely they existed. Was Sunblest a cheap brand? Well, I remember cheaper stuff, but not scutty ridiculously low priced stuff like these days. IIRC Sunblest was cheap, wasn't Rathbones too?
November 18, 201114 yr I remember "Happy Shopper" and "My Mum's" brands when I was a kid. "My Mum's" bread was fucking horrid. Even when toasted you could taste the cheapness.

I think I am a bit older than you though. Anyhow, my mum used to do loads of baking and passed that skill on to me. There is no reason people should resort to eating shite because they're skint. Learn to cook. God, I sound old. Oh and another thing, I tooted on the whoops counter in Booths the other week and picked up some proper good stuff dated that day. Even a smoked salmon mousse. Straight in the freezer, job's a good un. Edited November 18, 201114 yr by no balls
November 18, 201114 yr Happy Shopper and My Mum's were the cheap brands that were sold in local shops. ... and yes, you are considerably older than me. Smoked salmon mousse you say? Sounds horrendous. Mousse should be chocolate or strawberry flavoured, not fish.

November 18, 201114 yr No Balls and CWP are right when I think about it - I can't remember cheap/supermarket own brands either. Then again I remember when my corner shop shut at 7pm, also going shopping in Morrisons on Newport Street (opposite Aults), Handburys on Great Moor Street and dodging the tramps buying cider at Kwiksave at the bottom of Churchgate. And if you doubt my 'poor' credentials Homer, take a look at that list of shopping venues. Happy Shopper bread - I'd have starved without that (29p for medium, 39p for toastie) when I first left home. It did taste funny now you mention it (sweet? someone told me that they ground up returned cakes and put them in the mix as a bulker) but my tastebuds were numbed round that time by consuming loads of 'Barnstormer' cider - ?1.89 for a 2L bottle or ?3 for 2X 2L bottles...
November 18, 201114 yr However the best sandwich (sort of) in the world is Porto's very own Francesina. Looks like one of those parmo's that the smoggies eat
November 18, 201114 yr Daz & Birch haven't been to Porto. Went and stayed for 2 nights, must have been too busy drinking to eat.
November 19, 201114 yr And if you doubt my 'poor' credentials Homer, take a look at that list of shopping venues. think its a boat most people were in. Remember seeing my mum crying as SJJ wanted some toast and she only had enough bread for tea.. Deffo remember happy shopper, no frills and "bestbuy"
