It does not preclude the referee from issuing a straight red. If he regarded Cahill's action as a deliberate trip rather than a mistimed and late tackle he may decide red is proper irrespective of the field position of those involved and other players. There was previous between Attwell and Cahill - perhaps Cahill should have borne that in mind, because Attwell seems to have done.

It is possible that the suspension will be doubled, and if the defence is based on the absence of a real goal scoring opportunity rather than that an established England defender mistimed his tackle and accidentally tripped an international colleague it just might be.

Fulham beat Liverpool the other night; yes the scousers had 10 men, but Fulham still had to scrap and fight and have belief...

 

The first step to getting points from anyone is believing that you will get something.....this is what riled me about our "tough start"; folk saying it'd be ok when we played the other teams - well confidence and momentum have gone by then

 

Whilst having realistic expectations you can't just write games off - look at teams that have supposedly been "too good" but gone down - that West Ham team the year we just stayed up for example - they had no discipline or belief and we're doomed if we think the same way

 

And how the supporters feel will affect the players

 

We need to DEMAND more each and every minute of every game.....you could see the huge difference when we did this under Allardyce and when it stopped towards the end of his tenure

But as you said on Saturday, the support was melancholic at best, even when he was sent off.

 

It's like everyone is accepting our fate - i'm fully aware that it's the players that really count and same goes for them; did they surrund the ref when Cahill went? I'm not suggesting mob rule, but fighting spirit would help...they just dropped their heads as if their fate was already sealed and it's just not good enough

The players often have bits printed in the Bolton News saying stuff like (v Stoke) The crowd were fantastic and really became a 12th man.

 

They think their play is proportional to the volume of crowd. We think our volume is proportional to the quality of football on show.

 

As long as players and fans think their version is right, we have one hell of a Catch 22 situation.

It's just wrong and it comes down to a belief and the players' belief comes from knowing they are doing the right things at the right times and if they keep doing their jobs properly - every minute of every game, then the results will look after themselves - confidence that they're stood in the right position for set pieces for example, because they do it day in and day out wothout fail

This is the most spineless team I have seen for, well, I can't remember when.

 

There is just no fight in the players at all. When things are going well and we take the lead in a game and have the upper hand, you can see that we are actually not too bad.

 

The problem is when things start going against us. If we go 0-1 we're sunk. Once the opposition start to build up a head of steam we crumble. It's always just a matter of time until we concede. I've been saying this for weeks and weeks now, but we don't have a leader on the pitch. This was never so obvious as against Chelsea when time and time again David Luiz ran, unchallenged from his own byline. All we saw was players shrugging. I didn't see anyone gathering the players together and trying to sort out the mess that we were all witnessing.

 

Until we've got some team spirit evident ON the pitch, I can't see how things will turn around. Sure, we may win on Saturday, but I don't think too many of us will be thinking, "Phew! We've turned the corner" anymore.

How do we explain, for example, the half time Opta stats at Swansea where ALL of their midfield had covered more ground than ours, and by some considerable distance too.

 

Poor pass completion % and stats like that I can live with, but when I see our players are running less than the opposition I find that hard to stomach.

when we went down to 9 against Leicester the fight came from the players and then the fans followed, we used to go behind and we'd be up because we knew no mattr who it was we would have a go and generally get summat, theres fook all now theres not even a bone crunching challenge going in to get excited about, or a player tracking back the length of the pitch to throw in a sliding tackle to stop a cross, there no movement to get excited about or a passage of play to get you off your seat...
