Globetrotter Posted December 31, 2011 Posted December 31, 2011 (edited) Ref Building Studies courses, I agree but that is not my point. The building studies courses are not as available now but 'David Beckham Studies' is. So, a kid today has to ho with his / her best choice available. I brought BIHE into because of other snuffy remarks about it being for thickos who could not get into Uni. That was never it's purpose. I did a building studies course there and the course was full of plumbers, bricks etc who were looking to 'progress - off the tools'. Therefore, in certain ages miners will become teachers and potential site managers will end up .... I have no idea, poor sods they ... Edited December 31, 2011 by Globetrotter
no balls Posted December 31, 2011 Posted December 31, 2011 I too found the BIHE comment a little silly too, I did textiles there 20 odd years ago along side overseas students. It was one of the best in the world back then, not just a special school for spaccy kids. Horses for courses and all that. These ex students now own the mills we once did & Bolton no longer has the facility or machinery to train uk students.
Globetrotter Posted December 31, 2011 Posted December 31, 2011 Exactly the same with papermaking. Another fine Lancashire industry that has gone away but at the time BIHE was had a world class reputation for educating this industry as well (and with the same result ref the overseas students).
Boby Brno Posted December 31, 2011 Posted December 31, 2011 I really do get fed up with the whole miners issue. I've said before that my Dad lost his job when the cotton industry collapsed due to cheap imports and I lost my career in Engineering due to cheaper production abroad. I doubt any of the miners thought about me or my Dad when they were buying there cheap imported jeans, cars tv's etc. Scargill was looking for a political fight with an illegal strike and lost. Thatcher didn't heed the advice but is being blamed.
MalcolmW Posted December 31, 2011 Posted December 31, 2011 Those ministers who stood their ground and argued their case well got their way. Those who couldn't cope with robust challenges to their arguments lost out - that was a good 90% of them.
MickyD Posted December 31, 2011 Posted December 31, 2011 Have the men of the cloth withdrawn their labour too?
cureforsanity Posted January 1, 2012 Posted January 1, 2012 I think the only thing Margaret got wrong was the poll tax, that to around 95% of the population (myself included) was a no-no and her undoing. Apart from that I was always in agreement. Regarding the poll tax, when it was 'watered down' I didn't see any labour politicians campaigning for it's demise, now we have council tax which to me is a 99% waste tax. Since labour got a foothold in the 90's we've had nothing but disorder, greed, inequality and no threat of discipline or punishment. And no, I'm not a Tory boy.
jules_darby Posted January 1, 2012 Posted January 1, 2012 Slight technical point David beckham studies never was or is available as a degree It was only ever one module as part of a sports studies degree studying the effect he had on sports marketing etc Actually one of the more academic modules on that course Not that I'm saying it's a worthwhile degree, but Gumbo may beg to differ As you were then
MickyD Posted January 1, 2012 Posted January 1, 2012 Oh hell, someone injects a bit of fact into a thread. You wouldn't even normally get that if you started a thread called INTERESTING FACTS!
pato Posted January 1, 2012 Posted January 1, 2012 I thought facts were in bold type whether copied from another website or quoted from a man down pub
MickyD Posted January 1, 2012 Posted January 1, 2012 No, you're mistaking facts with forum SHOUTING. Facts is where you type ITK after the fact.
pato Posted January 1, 2012 Posted January 1, 2012 thought shouting was all capital letters? They never did forum etiquete at school nor how to spell etiquete
Globetrotter Posted January 1, 2012 Posted January 1, 2012 To continue the technical point theme - it was actually media studies ...
MalcolmW Posted January 1, 2012 Posted January 1, 2012 Re David Beckham studies: as a 13year-old he was asked to write his job ambition. "To be a proffesional footbaler". Spelling 60%, clearly a pass mark.
Sir_Francis Posted January 1, 2012 Posted January 1, 2012 No, you're mistaking facts with forum SHOUTING. Facts is where you type ITK after the fact. I thought it was where you type FACT after the fact ?
Traf Posted January 1, 2012 Posted January 1, 2012 they did at Hayward apparently. Etikwet Heywood, shurely.
jules_darby Posted January 1, 2012 Posted January 1, 2012 Globetrotter It wasn't media studies, as I said it was sports studies The module was taught by Ellis Cashmore at Staffs Uni And that is a fact my friend
Globetrotter Posted January 2, 2012 Posted January 2, 2012 Jules - I am sure that Ellis did teach this as part of some sports related course but the fact is that the whole Dave B studies thing came to prominence as part of a media studies initiative. Of course i know there is no such degree available and i am sure most of our friends on here are not so influenced by what i say to think otherwise. The point again, for me, is that we each do the best with the hand that we are dealt. I consider myself lucky that I had a wide range of useful choices, for todays lot I am less optimistic and I feel a little sorry for them ..
Bobcat Posted January 2, 2012 Posted January 2, 2012 i sure wish the degree in golf was available when i left school...
jules_darby Posted January 3, 2012 Posted January 3, 2012 i sure wish the degree in golf was available when i left school... Golf scholarships / degrees were available in UK in the 90's
