The company where I work are launching a cycle to work scheme (you pay for the bike at source, tax breaks etc).

 

The company which we're using only use Halfords for bikes.

 

We can apply for between ?100 and ?1000 of vouchers to be spent on the bike and any ancillaries (lights, lock etc).

 

I will be using the bike daily cycling a total of 12 miles (6 miles there, 6 miles back).

 

I have looked on the website and am completely stumped, do I get a road bike or a hybrid bike or a mountain bike?

 

Any cyclists out there that can help?

Buy a second hand bike and flog the vouchers.

Also are your employers providing some where secure to store the bike and showers?

I'd pick a hybrid with rear rack, that way won't need to carry luggage on your back, which is bad for you. Mountain bikes are no good for the road, racing bike would be better, hybrid best of all worlds.

I'd personally get an hardtail mountain bike. Lock out the sus and it will be fine with some XC tyres. Or if you have no intention of going off-road then get some more road worthy tyres. The Boardman bikes are Ok at Halfords and get some decent reviews. You can overspend on the scheme i think if you pay the difference.

boardman bikes are very decent from halfrauds.

Halfords are cunts. See if you can get the voucher for somewhere else. Personally i would get a Gazelle bike (massive over here) they are excellent and last forever. if you are using it every day you need a good one

Still, get yourself a mountain bike (front suspension only) and then stick some road tyres on there. Then if you do decide to do some off road stuff you just pop the original tyres back on. For road tyres I highly recommend getting some Schwable Marathon Plus (or similar). Had mine on for about 3 years not and not one puncture despite having covered hundreds of miles.

this will do the job at ?750, then spend the rest on all the bits you ever need. clothing, shoes, helmet, computer, spare tyres & tubes, lights, tool kit, pump.

 

if your actually going make use of the bike and get out an about, get a hardtail (front shocks only) mountain bike. then a load of kit again.

If you do get into it, you'll be upgrading to a drop bar bike before you know it. Might has well do it straight off.

 

Quick on the road and unless you are doing really rocky singletrack stuff more than capable offroad.

Will you be causing half mile tailbacks whem riding uphill like a twat in the middle of the road, ignoring the highway code, riding without lights the wrong way and jumping red lights by using the footpath like the some of the wankers I see getting in my way and scattering pedestrians in a morning?
