When youve hundreds of violent criminals under one roof, you don't want them getting bored. They also pay ?1 a week out of a prison wage of approx ?10 for the privilege of watching tv. Would you pay 10% of your salary to watch freeview? They get to spend the rest on pay phone credit at charges higher than bt rates and/or treats at prices higher than the corner shop!

My brother in law went into the prison service in the late 80's in his late 30's. He always struck me as too mard to order rough cons about. He was at Strangeways during the riot and demolition. Over a few beers I asked him about this and why UK prisons were so cushy compared to the Yank institutions. His reply was that the first rule of thumb was self preservation and that USA prison guards were of completely different breed who would not flinch at using force or weapons if needed. They also had more and bigger prisons and far more wardens per 100 prisoners. Over here its about keeping the inmates quiet. Thats why there is TV's etc and a blind eye is turned to most recreational drugs etc. Prisoning by consent was his mantra.

You want them reflecting on and regretting when they chose to take someone's life for every single remaining day of their miserable lives. I'm not saying somewhere like San Quentin should be the model to follow, but IMO it should be a lot closer to that than it currently is.

But, the US Justice system is not ecactly raving success is it ?? With crime on the down, and rehibilitaion on the up ??? Probably the worst in the world....even with these tougher prisons, and 3 strike rule. I would say that it proves they are failing, massivley. I think we are closer to getting it right than the yanks, the problem for me is the Term's some serve are way way off.
June 27, 201214 yr I guess it all depends who/what we're dealing with. If we're talking about murderers and nonces who should never set foot in the outside world again then a US Supermax type prison is the future as far as I'm concerned. It's not so simple though when you get into the less serious crimes. Of course you have to not de-humanise (is that even a word?) them and make them feel like there is no hope for them in the 'free' world again. They need to be educated. On the other side of the coin, if prison isn't that bad then the thought of repeat offending and the fear going back in there if caught isn't that bad. Edited June 27, 201214 yr by DazBobParr

I'm not sure if that was tongue-in-cheek so...But do you mean those 'Supermax' prisons where someone gets sent on remand for a relatively minor crime like nicking a car or credit card fraud. They then get to share a cell with about 8 murderous psychopaths, to later subsequently re-emerge into society with a ringpiece like the Mersey Tunnel coupled with a new found burning misanthropy?
