aye, i was under the impression (hopefully, ignorantly misinformed) that benfits for 2 non-working parents was more than that, all things considered.

Child Support, Job Seekers Allowance etc is classed as income. Housing Benefits (rent) & Council Tax Benefits is paid directly to the landlord/local authority so is not classed as benefits. The average wage is about £21k - if you take out mortgage/council tax payments, you wouldn't be far of £11k. It's not a bad living for doing fuck all..

For a large part of our early life we would have been counted as "living in poverty", and I'm sure at times our mother struggled to feed us, but she always made sure we ate.......and every penny she earned was spent "properly" - she used to save up for months so that we could have the occasional treat of a visit to McDonalds. Fuck me, how times have changed

That's how Housing Benefits/Council Tax Benefits is calculated - basically all DwP administered benefits are classed as income and that figure is used to determine whether the local authority pays your rent and council tax. I've seen claimants with 'earnings' of more than £30k a year getting HB/CT benefits. The link below shows what will be classed as 'income' under the new Universal Credit scheme from April next year. Council Tax benefit will still be exempt from this.

Thats the problem at the moment. The government want people to get back to work but it isn't worth their whilst when the can earn more on benefits.

Wasn't there something done a month or two back that said there are 8000 at risk families in the country and 800 are in Bolton, at risk seemed to mean child abuse.. pretty depressing.. my limited first hand experience of families in poverty is that they've got full sky, smoke like a chimney but have no carpet or wallpaper.. oh occasionally the kids have designer trainers but haven't eaten anything but turkey dinosaurs for months... They predictably want the NHS to clean up their messes, there's a culture of I deserve this..On the flipside there are people desperately making ends meet and doing their best for their kids with limited budget or support.. the benefit systems not wrong its the scum that abuse it as their god given right, they ruin it for other people who genuinely need a foot up. Unfortunately due to them it probably needs changing

It's all well and good saying they (the benefits lot - not the sisters, 'Babestation' is always recruiting) should 'get a job', I was in the Town Hall's 'one-stop shop' for a legitimate, non-scroungy reason yesterday - I'd venture half of those in there were unemployable in any capacity. I'm not saying benefits as a lifestyle is valid - merely pointing out the apparent situation.

I'm not having one in 5 kids in Bolton lives on their own with their mum.

If we keep giving these people benefits for doing fcuk all then they will continue to take it. They should be made to earn their benefits by doing charity work and benefits should be paid in vouchers that aren't valid for ciggies and booze. Any shop found giving cigs and booze for vouchers should be heavily fined and not allowed to accept vouchers anymore.

Yes but currently they get more the more they breed. So no, if she knows how to work the system, she'll not just have one.
