Apart from the hairdressers/barbers opposite the army store. I reckon he's a gayer, but he's alreet, plays good tunes and you can have a beer or a capri-sun along with your haircut for £8.

Oi, that was me grandads watering hole. Used to be a lot better then though. Don't know where they moved all the scutters from into Tonge Moor but it has certainly changed a lot since '88. People kept nice gardens and stuff. They now seem to be storage areas for shagged out furniture.

You'd be testing me memory a bit there mate. Other than Tintern Avenue, I think only Firwood Lane and Firwood Grove actually joined the two directly (Tintern where I was dragged up). Might have changed? Just a bunch of other random street names in the area I remeber (not joining Crommy Way and TMR), Le Gendre St., Furness Ave., Exeter Ave., St Bees Road (used to be rozzers housing), Pegamoid St.

I can remember 3 blokes in Tintern vying for the 'Boltons Best Garden' title every year. Deadly serious with accusations of sabotage and allsorts. They'd be almost at each others throats and it was us little scrotes having night time privet hopping races and the like :-)

It's not changed much in 30 years, Mad Sid's barbers on Moorfield Grove has gone and they've built a crazy island on Fountains Ave. Oh and I think Slark's has become a charity shop and Jim's Scotch Beef is now Hampson's or something.

Mad Jack sold it to Mad Sid did he (or passed it down to his son)?

Reminds me of the dire warnings me grandad used to give me about Mad Jacks (he trailed all the way to Cains near Queens Park):-

"Mate o' mine went in and said, 'I want my hair to look like Elvis Presleys'. 'OK son'. Started chopping and carving chunks out - a reet fcuking mess that looked like it had been done wi a knife and fork. 'Elvis Presley doesn't have it done like that!!!' 'He does when he comes here.' " Me grandad had a million of em. Kept me away from Mad Jack though.

Diametrically opposite to me then. Tintern Avenue, TMR end (No. 42).

Tintern Avenue, Haroldene Street, etc.

We got out of the area around 1985ish, it was starting to turn around that time iirc.

Me mum and dad moved into le gendre st in the mid 80s after i left home, i wasnt keen on it to be honest but i did see the lad from kes in the video shop on tmr near the conny club.

I was born on Tonge Moor Road in a pram shop next door to the post office. Then we upgraded to Breightmet :)

How did you mum shoot you into a pram? Good aim!

despite my regular shakes of the head at how folk can afford to be 6 deep outside a dive of a pub on bury rd each and every tea time, bury rd does actually show that being a main road out of town in a less than affluent area doesn't necessarily mean shithole

Youngest of five, practice makes perfect NB :)

Perhaps, because it leads into somewhere that shows being a less affluent former mill town, doesn't necessarily mean your commercial centre is a shithole?

So, is the Starkie a shithole or not?
