The Case For The Defence - Would It Be A Good Idea To Have One?

Having some time on my hands, I decided to take a look at our goals against since Owen Coyle became manager

Season Matches Goals Conceded Average per match Clean Sheets

2009-2010 23 37 1.6 4

2010-2011 46 66 1.4 8

2011-2012 46 85 1.84 5

2012-2013 7 12 1.71 1

The 2011-12 season from (and including) the semi-final, we conceded 18 goals in 7 games (2.5 per game).

Taking this into account, we need to score at least 2 per game to get a result, and I think we all know we ain't going to do this.

We either need a defensive coach or a brickie to fill the goals in. Sandy Stewart (assistant manager) was apparently a left back as a player - that may explain our full back problems. Steve Davis (first team coach) was apparently a centre back when he played.

So the question is - what the fuck are they coaching?

Basically anyone who can have a pop at knight this season is a complete plant pot.

We'd be bottom without knight and eagles.

Its the same issue as last season. Its friggin hard to be a centre back with bugger all protection infront of you, and having to constantly sweep up behind mears.

And its bluddy hard to be a winger watching the ball sail past you towards davies and with 2 centre mids not giving you any options inside.

You're not talking about football, are you ?

We don't play that around here.

It's Crazy how we've gone from a winning team playing 'football' to now, under the same manager with 75% of the same team.

Is Holden literally that important to the whole thing? As in if he plays, whatever we do in training clicks. And if he doesn't then we just punt it. Or just before kick off he tells everyone to not listen to coyle and let him look after the tactics.

I always got the impression that was happening towards the end of Megson's reign. You could see him screaming at the players and getting agitated because they clearly weren't listening to him.

Not the only thing. There's also Elmander (possibly), Cahill, the need to cut budgets, the Muamba effect, other long term injuries, loss of Fred Barber this season, a nightmare fixture list to start last season, that FA Cup defeat etc etc.

Some of that is Coyle's problem, others not so much.

If we get a new man in, he'll have no money and little room to move. Bit like Coyle. Which limits who will come and the impact they will have.

He has, but he seems to be the defensive scapegoat on here at present.

One poster blamed him for the penalty last night FFS!

That would be tower FM telling all and sundry at the time that knight wrestled him down for the penalty.

Top work by tower FM!

but hopefully they appoint a higher quality backroom staff, rather than just friends and family?

With no effective defensive midfielder our defence has been left exposed. Mears looks scared of the ball in posession, and with CYL offering nothing, seems content pumping it long for Davies.

Coyle still has no idea what our best defensive formation is, there is certainly very little to suggest they feel comfortable playing as a unit.

There's talk of Steven Warnock coming in on loan

Won't change a thing like

aye, and hopefully they will you know, do training and stuff that involves being organised and knowing what your role is, not just playing 7 a side and expressing yourself

well, it's all about players, not systems, so chuck another one in and see if things get better - that's the plan

at least warnocks an experieced left fullback & not a right back played in the wrong position or someone who can be turned like a loose leaf folder

bring him in ..............

warnock, i've read, is being lined up to play centre midfield

you couldn't make this shit up

im just reading a book a work about a certain type of agile development framework (a computer software thing)

i have just read this line...

"Although people are the primary determinant of succes for IT solution delivery project, in most situations it isnt effective to simply put together a good team of people and let them loose on the problem in hand"

how fucking apt!

You lost all credibility when you claimed to have read a book.

i certainly wont finish it, if that helps

Was there something about repeating ad infinitum the same thing, it not working then it never will?

Albert Einstein defined Insanity as "...doing the same thing over and over again expecting different results..."
